hello ihave to change the gear box on my galaxy 1.9 i have been told that it is easier to drop the sub frame out when doing this  any views on this     many thanks dave c

Are you using a ramp or doing on floor?

If it was me I would try to just drop it down one side and support on a stand to give enough space to wrestle the box out.

no ramp mores the pity cold old floor  cheers   dave c

Subframe removal will also require removing the rack or at the very least unbolting it which frankly is normally a PITA.

If your AC works then its an option but if not, the system is likely out of gas so I would remove the front end which ironically is normally easier then dropping the SF.

I concur, having done it twice I have dropped the box from underneath on my own while its on axle stands and also taken the front end off, if your AC is out of gas then front end is by far the easiest and probably not much difference timewise.
