Steering column

Well the old gal has failed MOT on unable to lock adjustable steering column,it has been in same position for ages and was locked in place fine so by them testing something has gone wrong.
Not able to look at it until tomorrow just wondering if anyone knows likely cause and remedy so I can go straight to it in morning?


Glad it will be going soon as got advisories for corrosion around suspension mounting areas,so give it another year and will probably need some welding doing!

Does the lock/unlock handle move freely/ normally? I would think it can only be some kind of friction brake that holds it in the desired position so there can't be too much to go wrong with it. It should be straightforward enough to remove the column cowls to see if there's anything obvious amiss, although whether it's enclosed so that you can't really see what's going on is another matter!

From what I remember it moves freely and has positive click going in to lock position. Garage are going to have a quick look to see if it is something simple as I am at work until 10pm and then London for few days tomorrow,hopefully they can do something to get it passed or I will be trying to sort in the hour or so I have free in morning. Always problems at most inconvenient of times! Bloody cars😂

I'm glad I mot my own car [emoji12] . It's not something I do on the test . I test as presented.

Must admit I haven't known it to be tested before,I certainly didn't do it years ago when I was in the trade.
The place where I took it has a sub tester in due to their own on annual leave,got a feeling he is being very anal when testing?

All sorted for Ã,£15 on top of the MOT price,once cowling off they found the handle is connected through some friction washers with a threaded bar all that was needed was a quick tighten of the M6 nut.
Having looked at MOT history online it seems the long list of advisories are basically child seat fitted,front tyres close on legal limit and the corrosion is all minor to front coil springs,front ARB and various parts of underside showing signs of corrosion. The main bit was an area near suspension mounting point although that is not severe or structure weakening. They certainly made out it was bad on the phone though!!
