Tried to connect up today
will not read ports
spent 2hrs with a computer programmer on it
still no go

Have you just installed VCDS on your laptop (new installation) or has it been used previously on another car or it just this car that it won't connect to.

You need to make sure Vagcom is using the same COM port, when you do the test in the options screen vagcom saves to COM port 1 to 4 you then need to look in device manager to make sure they match, quite often device manager will save to a higher COM port number.
So what ever number vagcom saved (1,2,3,or 4 alter device manager accordingly.

Does the light illuminate on the cable plug when you attach it to the socket.

yes red light on plug with computer or car connected.
it is a usb connection,LITE only shows com port  1 2 3or 4
no usb port.
says to contact dealer.
computerman got system to pretend it was port 3

If it won't pass test then it's not configured correctly, on your laptop go to control panel double click on system then look for the hardware tab then click on device manager plug your lead into laptop now look down the list you should find ports(COM & LPT) double click on it, it should say USB serial port COM ? this number must match the one on the VCDS lite options screen.

Lastly double click USB serial port COM ? to open serial port properties, click the port settings tab then click advanced, look for latency timer this is normally set to 16 reduce ths to 2 and if your com port is wrong you can change it on the top line then click OK you should then be able to test in the options screen.

If you do this not connected to the car the port test should say, port status OK interface not found.
When connected to the car the port test should say port status OK interface found.

That should be it

Ok:

Start > Control Panel > System > Device Manager > Ports

You should have "USB Serial Port (COM XX)" there - whats it say?

Ok so in VCDS you need to select COM1 as the communications port. The driver thing you should try and fix though first as you shouldn't have that - see if you can find a usb to serial driver elsewhere (try a generic FTDI version)

basic problem was drivers
finally got a 64bit driver
that worked
