Hello,

I have recently brought my first galaxy - a '02 2.3 Zetec I'm very pleased but do have a couple of questions, firstly, it was advertised as a 2002MY 2.3 Zetec, what does the MY stand for (if anything!?)

Secondly, how come there don't seem to be many posts relating to the 2.3? It is a crap engine and it's not very popular!?

Thirdly, the two things that I do miss from the old car (mondeo) are cruise control and trip computer with range, MPG etc, from reading on here I understand that cruise control is hard to retro fit on the 2.3 so maybe I will give that a miss, but I can't find much info about the trip computer, is it a simple as changing the instrument cluster and the wiper stalk?

Thanks in advance for your help :-)

Steve.

MY stands for model year.

Why do you class the 2.3 as a crap/ unpopular engine (or have I misread what you have typed)? It found use in the Mk2 Galaxy and the Scorpio, and a few Transits that were fitted with petrol engines. I think possibly a variation of this engine in 2 litre form was used on the Escort RS2000 (mkIV).

Some of the 2.3's certainly did have cruise control but maybe it was just the Ghias of that build date.

MY = Model Year

I suspect most of the users on this site have diesels.  Most of the problems features seem to be common to all models.  (I don't think he was saying the engine was crap, but asking if it was insanitybeard)

Mirez will no doubt be along soon with details about the trip computer - he's the expert on stuff like this.  I believe easiest way would be to find a dash from a 2.3 Ghia with the same gearbox and replace the stalk like you say. The standard MKII Trip computer doesn't include range, but it can be enabled using Mirez's instructions using a VAG-TACHO lead (I've done it on mine).

Hello and thanks for the quick replies!

I feel abit silly about the MY question now, as soon as I read your replies I realised I already knew the answer! :-p

Just to clarify as silverbeast suggested I am more than happy with the 2.3 engine, I just wasn't sure if the lack of questions specific to this engine was because it is unpopular or because it's reliable!

No worries, I think there are certainly more diesels in circulation than petrol models, I went for the diesel because of the fuel economy and lower emissions (and therefore cheaper tax), and because of the higher torque, that engine has to move a fair sized chassis! Swings and roundabouts though, the diesel is more complex mechanically and therefore costly to fix if something major (like a unit injector or turbo) goes bang, also the diesels are more prone to clogging up the inlet tract if used mainly around town.

Absolutely, the 2.3 is a cracking engine but its between a rock and a hard place in the Galaxy. The diesel is significantly better on fuel and the V6 is significantly more powerfull whilst not being that much less economical. I had a 2.3 for a couple of years and loved it  :)

To gain range, yes replace the cluster and stalk. Possibly, depending on the loom fitted, you'll need to add two cables.

Cruise is a bit of a pain on the 2.3 as its vaccumm operated, of course it can be retrofitted but it would be best to find a doner car to rob all the bits out from!

Ahh sounds good, will it also add MPG and outside temp (if I add temp sensor)
As much as I miss the cruise control I think I will give it a miss for now, see If I can source new cluster and wiper stalk cheap enough first!

Thanks for your quick replies :-)

Mpg yes,
Temp only with the sensor and you will need to wire that ;)

Am I right in saying that there are three different clusters, the one I have with no central display, one with half display, and one with full display? What is the difference between the one with half display and full display? Also, as I have a petrol engine, does it matter if I use one from a diesel car? I have found the following on eBay 221382133963, presumably this will be suitable? Also, how do I get the mileage correct?

Sorry for so many questions in one post, just don't want to buy the wrong parts! :-)

The full display cluster was only fitted to vehicles with factory fitted sat-nav, most Ghia models will have had the half display. If you fit a cluster from a diesel into a petrol- firstly, the tacho will be incorrect (the diesel tacho dial only goes up to 6000rpm), secondly the calibrations for the speedometer/axle ratio will be different, some of which you may be able to alter with VAG-com but probably not all. IIRC Mirez said it was possible to input the mileage with VAG-tacho but I have no experience of this. Quite aside from the tacho being incorrect, I think there will be enough programming differences to make it impossible- i.e, settings specific to the diesel that cannot be altered with VAG-com. I stand to be corrected of course!

Nope that's spot on, you need a replacement cluster from a 2.3. The V6 one won't work either but yes, you can correct mileage using vag-tacho afterwards :)

Half-Fis vs Full Fis:

Full has the ability to display nav instructions and/or audio information
Full gives the vehicle outline and door open/closed information
Full displays orange/red warnings with text instead of a dash symbol

Brill thanks for the info again - am I right in saying that vag-tacho uses the same lead as vagcom?  I'm guessing that the wiper stalk is the same regardless of engine?
Lastly - does it matter if it comes from an auto car? Is there anywhere I can find the different part numbers?

Thanks again and I'm sorry to have so many questions - but it's pay day tomorrow so I want to get ebaying! :-)

Nothing is simple! Lol is there anything I need to look for particularly or just search vag tacho on flea bay?

Can you, please, give a little bit more information about this 2 cables. From where and to where, what is pin number and what for this cables are needed. Thanks
