Ive been getting a strange rattle from (I think) the drivers side front wheel area.

Its inconsistent but normally can be heard when slowing down, but not always.

The sound doesn't seem related to the speed of the car as far as I can tell.

Ive jacked up the car and cant detect any play or issues with the suspension

I thought perhaps heat shields but a quick look doesn't reveal anything. I haven't had the undertray off so possibly something under there.

Any ideas ?

Sorry to be so vague but it's one of those noises that's difficult to pin down.

Common suspension problems are worn drop links, anti roll bar bushes, missing brake pad anti rattle springs, centre wheel cap loose, wheel bolts loose, wheel bearing.
Plastic air inlet trunking in the inner wing has been known to rattle

Well I've driven the car a bit more and don't think its suspension or drivetrain related, the rattle isn't always there  and makes no difference whether in gear or not.
Its not related to the speed of the engine or the vehicle.
It's not a knocking as you go over bumps, more a metallic resonating rattle sound.
I thought it might be stones caught somewhere but as far as I can tell there are no stones caught in the undertray.
The air duct - do you mean the duct that disappears into the inner wing behind the drivers side headlight ? If so this is plastic as far as I can tell and doesn't seem to be loose.

So any other ideas ??   :-)

(i) Have you checked the stone shield on the inside of the front disc isn't close/loose.  I had a shriek that only happened in reverse.

(ii) The small shield on the lower ball joint can also get close and catch on the disc too.

Would you say the noise is more pronounced when accelerating or decelerating or when changing gear.

No, it doesn't even matter if car is in gear or not

Definitely a resonance sort of sound - more noticeable when slower probably because it's easier to hear.

heat shield on the exhaust come lose per chance?

I have a similar problem but if I apply the brake just slightly the noise goes
I am thinking maybe a lose caliper it has been doing my head in for weeks and have narrowed it down to hopefully this now to investigate and will update

Check your anti rattle springs on the caliper you may have one or both missing.
