hi all
can some confirm what i am thinking.
summer hols are off to spain with the caravan just sort of 3k traveling so been over the gal with a fine tooth comb all in good order but i have just noticed the temp gauge is just sitting on the N of normal whe the engine id running 80-90 c  normaly it should site in the middle . but shes not over heating yet checked all censors not faults found . change the water pump 18 mth a go same time as timing belt just had a good look underneath with then enging running there a slight noise coming from the pump so i thing its going to be a thermostat problem and my be a new pump which in its self is a pain so gents be for i begin is there any thing else i should check before the strip down the worst of it is i have just stripped the belts and pully off checking them before i go :(

If the temp gauge is reading lower than normal then I wouldn't be suspecting the water pump first off, the thermostat maybe, which is much less aggro than the water pump to change. Could it simply be a dodgy sensor or gauge?

If it was me I'd take the thermostat off and replace, and at the same time with the thermostat removed you should be able to check the water pump impeller via the thermostat opening to see if it has come detached from the shaft. I'm assuming the coolant level & condition is good?

Thanks for the advice
was thinking of changing the thermostat never been changed will also strip the water pump as well ever if I only changed it 15k ago due to the pinking noise coming from that direction as for the gauge and censors their ok

all
am I being a bit stupid had the stat change took for a good drive(M.way) I notice the temp sitting at 97 degrees even up to 100 but needle stayed at the R (normal) can any body tell me what should it be
Thanks

Is that 97-100 degrees figure you've quoted from a VCDS readout? If it is and you're saying the temperature gauge reading on the dial cluster isn't correlating with that then to me that suggests either a dodgy gauge or the sensor responsible for the temp gauge is separate to the sensor used by the ECU for reading engine/coolant temp, and the sensor for the gauge is faulty. I'm not sure of the setup on a Mk1 Galaxy, hopefully one of the other guys can advise you better than I.

hopefully and I mean hopefully just done a pressure test no leaks  :) top hose from rad hot bottom hose cold looks like new stat faulty as for the reading they are from the on board reading and judging from how hot the top hose was theirs no doubting it defo a circulation problem  and since the only thing that's been done to it is new stat and coolant it must be the stat fingers crossed  ;)

Update
changed the stat the one that was put in for some reason open at different temp or faulty check the original one it opened a 87 c so swap it out took her for a go run and left running out side for a while to get 85c sits just in the center of norm just takes a lot longer to get there hope this has sorted it
