Have just ordered a new MAF sensor, haven't lost power badly but does hesitate sometimes when booting it , unplugging maf has little or no effect but is showing a higher double in fact reading (actual) in measuring blocks 003 and a 84.5 % duty cycle.
Will let you know the outcome.

Chris do you have the readings as a log? If not would you be able to do one and sent it my way? I'd like to graph a faulty MAF for our reference library.

How much are new sensors going for these days?

Update
Changing the unresponsive MAF was a red herring on further investigation there is a leak in the EGR diaphragm, now replaced with a genuine Wahler unit from Ebay.
Running sweet now and vagcom readings all OK.

Ohh really? So you've got the old MAF on and its reading ok? Thats annoying, I'll have to update the ref library again :)

It's even more annoying for me the MAF was Ã,£65 which is non returnable once opened and Ã,£133 for a new EGR valve. :-[

I think most people including myself have been under the impression if you drove the car with the MAF disconnected with no noticeable loss in power then the MAF was most likely at fault.
So it seems it's not conclusive to blame the MAF.

Mark perhaps these readings could be highlighted to imply a faulty EGR diaphragm.
Have since run the output tests and there is a distinct change in engine note when the EGR test is enabled
