Car sound deadening and noise insulation

Well after my sucess with door insulation where I added "Fat-Mat" and then a closed cell foam layer to each door (which made a significant difference) I've become slightly obsessed lol

Spent today preparing for my order of "Silent Coat" which is due in tomorrow:

The back end comes apart surprisingly easily actually and I went from complete to stripped in about an hour.  She's all vac'ed out and cleaned ready for the isulation layer to go down - I'm very optimistic since when I did the doors they didn't resonate that much anyway but tapping on the floor pan there is a noticeably twang. Will keep you informed of how I get on!

Well its back together now but as yet I've not been anywhere to test lol! It had a total of 40sq ft of deadening applied and 30sq ft of foam with a total weight of 7Kg added.

Both rear wings were covered, both arches and the floor. The roof had three strips of insulation applied but not the same amount of coverage due to the amount of structural bracing that's up there. Both tail door cards had a layer of foam added to the back of them.

The front escaped due to how its all put together, lifting the front seats, media centre and centre console out was reasonably strait forward and the carpet comes out easily enough but then the problems start. There is a meaty sound deadening pad already installed and its glued to the floor and rips easily! It also sits under the vent shaft that feeds the 2nd row footwell and that didn't seem to want to come out at all easily so the idea was abandoned at that point - although its dubious if much would have been achieved anyway as there are factory sound deadening sheets installed in the front.

This is the drivers side quarter panel before installation (apologies its out of focus), you can see VW/Fords token piece of sound deadening sheet on the arch and quite a bit more on the back of the wing. Tapping these areas with a screwdriver however still gave a hollow resonating sound.

Moving forward the floor pan has more token sheets but where its missing (just behind the media center in this photo) sounds REALLY thin and definitely tinny when tapped with the driver:

Thats a CCF layer installed under the seat runners and a layer of deadening on all the rest of the exposed metal. Certainly putting the seats back in there is noticeable difference - they sound solid and don't give that usual resonating twang as they lock in place anymore.

I'll report back once I've actually been somewhere in it

that has got to make a difference, nice neat job as well. could you post up were you got the sound deadening and foam from adhesives used ect

Certainly, I did a fair bit of research and you basically want heavy - the more weight the better. I used ebay for the CCF as it was significantly cheaper then most car suppliers. They do 3mm, 6mm and 9mm variants but I went for 3mm to avoid "packing" the door cards out and having refitting issues! Note this stuff is EVIL sticky so be warned as once its stuck you wont reseat it or remove it!

Then for the deadening sheets I used 3 suppliers and 3 different types:

Firstly:
Wayside adhesives mat. This is cheap and cheerful stuff but the closest resemblance to the factory mat, I used this on the underside of the bonnet and inside the front wings.

Fatmat, much more flexible and has the aluminium layer that most audio sites recommend but it was quite lightweight and I was somewhat disappointed with it. I used this in the doors and tailgate.

Finally Silent Coat. Its feels much heavier then fatmat and has the ali layer. Plus its easy to work with because its in sheets not a roll and also its cheaper. This is what you see on the rear quarters and floor pan.

Personally, if I were doing it again I would only use Silent Coat - out of the three I can at least see a use for the Wayside adhesives version as it's a lot cheaper then fatmat and can be used where it's use is arguably unnecessary but its not on the same scale as FM or SC. Comparing those I would say SC is cheaper, heavier and easier to work with so why bother with FM? In reality though its simply basic physics - add weight to the panel to lower its resonating frequency.

Yeah being the inquisitive soul I am I would have used it for an inspection but one of the screws rounded off on me - grr, hopefully I won't need to open it anytime soon as the thought of drilling that out isn't a nice one given the location lol.

lol, stock sound system mate - well upgraded to nav but its the OEM version. I do have a mate who owns an ICE shop thats constantly trying to sell me the old setup's so you never know but I'm getting past boom boom boom these days

Thanks for the info i have just started to do my ICE but i have only got as far as fitting the stereo and door speakers at the moment looks like the door cards are coming off again

Well just completed a 300 mile round trip and it was noticeably quieter, also a marked increase in bass response from the speakers so all in all well worth it

Mark what sound setup have you gone for? I want to upgrade all my speakers and maybe the headunit as well so I'd like to know what you fitted?
