when accelerating I see smoke

On a motorway iwant to overtake someone I press the accelerator and after around 2000revs I see a cloud of smoke not blue but grey, any ideas

I would say turbo seals are going/gone
Has your engine oil level dropped suddenly, is it using lots of oil?

It doesnt look like oil smoke no blueish tint, it disperses quickly, as though its running rich if that sounds right, I was thinking of putting some injector cleaner in the next fill up , to see what that does

egr valve might need a clean out.

right bear with me,

if you look on ebay for a egr blanking plate,theres a seller showing the general location of it,also i think it may well be on the ford wiki page but i think thats for a mondeo but again gives you a general idea.

I found it .just undecided whether to clean it all or blank it up.will it pass an emissions test if I did either

It should pass that bit of the test but it is illegal to blank it so if spotted then youll fail the overall test. I am not that familiar with the the mk3 but most modern ecus will detect and throw a fault code if the egr is disabled.
