Can somebody help me diagnose this problem please. When I tart the engine I get a belt squealing noise followed by rattling. I know the belt needs doing I was just wondering whilst at it is there anything else wrong?
Can you tell what this tapping noise is?

Sounds like the bearings within the alternator to me. Take the aux belt off and give it a twirl by hand to confirm.
Ps, no such thing as an AMZ engine. AUY, ASZ and BTB (115, 130 and 150 respectively)

As you have said you have the squealing noise aswell check your alternator clutch pulley, you can do this by removing belt, now locate the alternator fan blades through the slots, now place a screwdriver against the fan blades while you turn pulley, you should be able to turn the pulley anticlockwise fairly easily but clockwise should be locked.
If it's locked both ways then it needs replacing.

That's great, cheers gregers. This weekend I'll just change the belt so I can have a good look ( the belt is quite badly cracked). Then next weekend will try to sort whatever is making the rattling noise.

The latter only removes the part of the belt which goes tot he alternator pulley. How easy is it to route the belt at the bottom. Does this have to be done from underneath?

I also noticed that the engine seems to be moving a bit more than it used it (as in idling movement) could this indicate that the tensioners might be at fault. Once the belt is off, how can I identify where the rattling has been coming from - I know about the alternator clutch pulley (thanks Chris) but how would I test the tensioner?
The belt can be changed without removing the undercover but is more difficult owing to lack of room, while belt is removed start engine to confirm noise is coming from auxiliary drive, spinning pulleys by hand may show up noisy bearings in alternator, aircon and tensioner pulleys also check the plastic tensioner pulley for ovality.

you say you have noticed a bit more movement from the engine?
have you tried grabbing hold of it(engine off) and seeing if its easy to rock?
or it could be your tensioner needs replacing aswel.
Will try rocking it. Is there just one tensioner? What is the other one in the link in my last post.
If the engine feels loose and can be rocked by hand then the rear engine mounting or roll restrictor has failed or possibly the attachment bolt(s) have sheared.
If the movement your referring to is in the auto belt tensioner moving when the engines on tick over then this will be the pulley and possibly tensioner as already discussed

There appears to be a change in 11/2005 the last few months of production for the MK2
Yours being a 2003 should be the first one and should be easily distinguished by the three bolt holes pointed out in the "how to" that you have already seen.
ICheers. I just thought perhaps there was two peices to the tensioner is something I was overlooking. It must be a fault in GSF's website for bringing the tensioner back as suitable for my vehicle.

iirc you need an open ended spanner inserted some where to take off the tension on the belt,cant remember where though. guys

The tensioner is pulled forward by fitting spanner on lug then pulling forward and place a suitable pin in the two holes provided.
Changed the belt and tensioner from above - all seems good :)
The tensioner now barely moves. Will see how she goes later when started up form cold.
I checked the alternator pulley. It moves one way with screwdriver in bladed, so should be ok. Although when spinning, it was a little lumpy. It would then move freely and become a bit lumpy again. Is that normal?
No that is not normal, it should spin freely.
Does it make a rumble sound when spinning? if so bearings are failing
No rumbling, it just felt a like it was catching a bit and then would run freely again. Bearings are failing on the alternator, or the clutch pulley needs replacing?
So if there's no noise run it for a few days, if everything still sounds OK then leave it be.
