Title: 2003 Rear Bumper Top Bracket Broken - Advice Plz
Post by: wackojackouk on October 09, 2013, 10:51:34 AM
Hi chaps

Some git caught the bumper on my Galaxy (about three times in the past 18 months) and they must have done it with some force as it was poking out at the side.

I popped it back in but it's not sitting at the right height and after looking a bit closer (and removing the strip under the rear light) it looks like the top bracket has broken away :(

On t'other forum I think someone else had this problem yonks ago and was given a finis part of 1107713 but Dagenham Motors says its not available.

Just wondering if anyone can help or suggest a DIY job to make the bumper sit correctly again.

Ta

ps - Will try and add a pic shortly from phone

Been a while since I took the rear bumper off but IIRC under those light covers are two bolts. Undo them and then slide the bumper back. From what I recall, On the side there is a peg which the bumper slides/sits in - it could be this is broken or more likely, the bumpers popped out which will be cured when you reinstall it.

Thanks Mirez.

Yeah I popped off the cover (I thought it was metal before lol) and found the bolt and can see where it's broken (where it attached to the bumper).

Here's a pic (below)

I can't see the side of the car but I think there is almost a very thin gully at the top (under the bodywork) and think that it could well slide/sit in as you say. There is a bit broken off but also a long bit where it goes around the corner so hopefully it should be able to sit back on there and look a bit better.

Do you have any suggestions for repairing or DIY the actual top bracket though as this would obviously make it more sturdy?

Cheers

wonder if you could gripfil it back on,or maybe use a 2 pack glue.
or a high module silicone?

as for fabricating a bracket im wondering if you have enough space underneath the bumper to be able to screw the bracket to?
you might be able to cut up and modify a joist/jiffy hanger.??

I had a broken bracket just like yours and I found that after I'd thumped the side of the bumper back into it's locating groove (Went with a very scary click!), the bumper was sitting and holding quite firmly without the broken bracket.

Just ensure that the clips along the top of the bumper are located over the top of the metal bumper bar that lies behind.  This will also keep the bumper strong and almost level.  If they aren't located correctly, remove the weather strip from along the bottom edge of the boot and remove half of the bumper.  Start at the attached side and clip it all along, with the final stage being the thump to the side.

Worked for me, so hope it does for you  ;D

Hi guys

Thanks for your input.

Got my car back today after MOT and Service. Failed MOT on a split CV Boot so got that done - total for everything was just over Ã,£400  :(

Anyhow, bumper wise, mechanic got it back inline saying he couldn't move it up until he removed the actual broken clip part and then it moved up fine  :)

Checked it again tonight as I have another issue (Broken scuttle tray) and it's dropped back down again.

Not sure what to do now as I don't think I can remove the bumper myself  (and my back probably wont allow it).

I still think the bumper should be removed and reseated (perhaps the side support is in the wrong place now etc).

Other option would be a body shop as the bumper needs a spray - could they repair the broken bracket (I had a split bumper on my old car fixed via plastic weld or something).

Any more suggestions, please keep them coming.

I'll try and take some photo's tomorrow with the cover off etc as well

Cheers guys

Its among the easiest of cars to remove the rear bumper on so might be worth giving it a go yourself.

A fix I have used in the past for this type of problem is to fashion a 'backing' from a thin sheet of aluminium, use the good side as a template, and then epoxy the broken plastic to it and the bumper.

My bumper has the same problem.  I only noticed it when I installed a towbar and had to take out the bumper crash plate.  The crash plate held my bumper in the correct position with the broken bracket.  Now the bumper hangs down very slightly on the broken side.  It's a job I have been meaning to sort out since.  I will probably go down the route that mirez has suggested.
