Title: Driver's Wiper not full sweep - stripped & lubed but still the same !
Post by: Fraz-ktf on October 02, 2013, 09:37:31 PM
Hi.

My driver's windscreen wiper was about 5" short of vertical on the final part of it's sweep, meaning there's a huge part of the windscreen by the pillar that wasn't being cleared.  Reading on forums, I decided that a strip & lube of the mech. was in order to sort out the problem.

I duly followed the tutorial, the spindle almost fell out on the driver's side and took 30 mins of lube and working to get the passenger side spindle out.  Plenty of wet & dry action, oodles of copperslip and re-assembled.  Also I split all the ball-joints and greased them up for good measure.  8)

Fitted it all back together and an hour later (After a million wiper-off / wiper-on tweeks) I eventually got the wipers to sweep the screen without catching eachother, coming to rest in the right place but to my horror, the driver's wiper is still the same 5" short of a full wipe!  (The passenger's does a full wipe, to parallel with the pillar)

I really need the driver's wiper to wipe fully until it is parallel with the pillar but I just can't fathom out what's wrong.  If I move the resting place of the driver's wiper, I can get it to do a full sweep but then the passenger's wiper jumps off the pillar (Over-wipes)

Help please, it's sending me nutty(er)  :'( :'( :o

Did you remove the nut from the short arm on the motor as this is critical when refitting, iirc there is a stop peg on the bracket that should be just touching when the motor is in the park position.

No, I didn't remove any nuts at all.  I just removed the spindles and split the ball joints, greased up and re-assembled.

They work very smoothly but I just can't fathom why the driver's side doesn't have a full sweep.

Wonder if the previous owner had removed the nuts?  Not sure which nuts they are or how to re-set it but would this affect the amount of "rotation" of a spindle?  I'm imagining that it needs to rotate a little further as the park position is great?

Thanks for the reply

I am talking about the single nut that holds the small link on the motor spindle, this has splines similar to the wiper arms and must be fitted in the correct position

No your honour, I haven't touched any nuts   ;D

That's not to say the previous carer didn't as the issue was noted when I bought the car. I just assumed it was a sticking spindle.

How would I check this for correct alignment please because, if I'm truthful, I'm not certain which nut you mean. It sounds perfectly feasible tho, if it would affect the amount of rotation of that one spindle. Is it a ratio thing between the 2 spindles?

Thanks for your perseverance, just pretend I'm only 6 when you explain it to me  ;)  ???  :-[

Right have just taken a photo of mine in situ with the scuttle tray removed notice the position of the cranked arm it should be facing  exactly to the left as you look at it.

Unbelievable!

I honestly can't believe you've done that for me, I'm so humbled and thankful to you.  You are a star.  :-* (Couldn't find a more appropriate smiley, so I hope you're Christine!  ;D )

If mine isn't like yours, do I simply undo the nut and rotate the arm until it all faces the left, straight? than re apply the nut?  Would this affect how much the spindle rotates from it's rest position?

I'm genuinely moved by your kindness and willingness to help me, like the other guys on here like Greggers, Mirez, silverbeast etc etc - Galaxy's must attract a better class of human that Passats  :D

You want to hear well no you probably wouldn't want to hear what my other half calls me when she see's me going outside with the camera.
Christine!!!!!!!!!!!!!! have you read my profile?

If you do need to remove the nut and reposition the cranked arm you will certainly need to remove the wiper arms and refit in the correct parked position.

Christine OMG  LOL

Wait for chrispb (look at his picture he doesn't look like a Christine to me ???) to confirm but I think your best bet would be:-
(i) Disconnect the nut and remove the crank arm from the spindle. Check all connections and arms are as in chris's original reply.
(ii) Turn on the wipers, then turn them off and wait for the motor to park.
(iii) Remove ignition keys - just to be safe.
(iv) Reconnect crank arm as pictured.
(v) Run wipers (after reinserting ignition keys!) and allow them to park.
(vi) Refit wiper arms as below.

Chris, I was just hoping against hope you were "Christine" coz I'm not comfortable sending "Kissy smileys" to blokes but I couldn't find another smiley that explained thankyou.  Does everyone look like their avatar?

OK, I got similar looks from the wife when I just went out into the rain to photograph my car.  Here is what mine looks like (No comments about show me yours . . . .  :P )

(http://i1149.photobucket.com/albums/o600/JennyTaylia/Car%20Stuff/Wiperarm_zps5d3cd10c.jpg) (http://s1149.photobucket.com/user/JennyTaylia/media/Car%20Stuff/Wiperarm_zps5d3cd10c.jpg.html)

So, I remove the nut (Can all this be done whilst the mech is in situ?) as pictured, uncouple the attached brass coloured crank arm.

Turn the wipers on and let them re-park themselves (Ensuring that the motor is parked too?)
Move the driver's arm (A little clock-wise) until the crank arm is pointing straight left, re-fit the crank arm.
Run the wipers again to let them park, to check that all is correctly aligned
refit the wiper arms

That's what I'd do. But first ensure all the levers and linkages are in the positions shown in Chris's first reply above. I seem to recall it is possible to put them back together in the wrong order, which may mean you don't need to readjust the crank arm.

Yeah, you can (And I did!)

I got the passenger wiper jumping off the pillar and then jumping into the engine bay.  Next, the drivers side parked and the motor kept twitching.

I then realised I'd put the passenger ball joint back together with the arm in front of the spindle (Doh!  :-[ )

All good now I think, just need to adjust the cam arm in the light tomorrow.

ps.. You don't look too well in your avatar  ;)

Just a question guys, from a newbie . . . . . . below a lot of your avatars, it says "Long standing member"

Isn't that just being boastful?  ???

Having a nightmare setting up these wipers, to do full sweeps.

If I put the cranked arm straight, when in park, the driver's still won't go anywhere near vertical.  Move the crank arm a little clockwise and it makes it a tad better but then I have to take off the passenger's wiper and re-position.

If you place the cranked arm further clockwise, the driver's wiper will get to vertical and I think it's all sorted but then I remove the ignition key, put it back in and as soon as I turn on the ignition, the wipers do a bit of a dance (Without moving the wiper stalk).  Flick the wipers on and they settle way up from the bottom.

If you go further still, clockwise with the cranked arm, the wipers stop at their furthest point and require a further touch on the stalk to re-park.

So much trial and error but eventually, they are parking beautifully but unfortunately, the driver's wiper is still about an inch away from reaching vertical on it's max sweep.

Just can't fathom it because my "Other Galaxy" has perfect wiper positioning, though it's done twice the mileage, so I'm reluctant to swap over the whole mechs as I'd have to strip & lube that one too and probably end up in the same position again.

I've followed everyone's kind advice but am I missing a trick here?

Sounds like your there, are you testing the wipers with the windows wet? it is a fine line getting them just right as you don't want them clashing with each other

They are just missing eachother and it's been adjusted spline-by-spline, so I think it's the best I'll get but I was doing the testing with the screen dry.

Next job, check & clear out the scuttle drains!

Being a logical guy, I wasn't happy with the state of affairs with the wipers, so I decided to remove the mech from the other car to compare them side by side because, on the 2nd car, the driver's wiper sweeps to within an inch of the pillar.

Now I'd got both mechs together, I set the mis-behaving one up to exactly the same as the  well-adjusted one but in for a penny . . . . I decided to strip and lube the one that was ok.

That done, I put that one on my "Best" car and put the other one on the 2nd car.

Results: Even though both wiper mechs are set up identically, one still refuses to wipe any nearer to the pillar than 5", where as the one that was good, on the 2nd car, is still sweeping to almost the pillar but it's lubed and should last a good while.

Conclusion:  There must be something wrong somewhere, with the 1st mech as it just will not do a full sweep, no matter how it's adjusted.

Now, my only issue is that the black plastic skirt
th sits at the bottom of the screen (With the wee-wee-men in it) is fouling on the bonnet hinge on the off-side.  It won't go any further up the screen and I've juggled about with the wiper mech mounting bolts but, once again, I'm stumped as to how to correct this new problem that wasn't there before I removed the stuff!

Any suggestions folks?
