Title: Reasonably priced diagnostic code reader
Post by: Scuba_do on September 30, 2013, 06:54:27 PM
Having been unable to get VCDS-lite working under Windows 7, can anyone recommend a reasonably priced diagnostic code reader that will diagnose the ABS system on a Mk2 as well as the other systems. We also have a Mk3 Galaxy so would like something that will work for that as well.

You really do need VCDS as the VW system "speaks" it's own language and is broken into modules. Any other "generic" code reader is going to only be able to talk to the engine ECU.

Have you played with the latency timers etc as detailed in a few posts on here? You should be able to get VCDS running on 7 without a problem as others have. Worst case then you could upgrade to a later version - my HEX/CAN version works perfectly on Win7 64Bit or alternatively, buy a knarly old laptop with XP on it just for car diagnosing...

Yes, it was the latency that was causing the problem. VCDS-lite reports an intermittent out of specification on the front right ABS sensor which when I reset the fault code re-appeared as an intermittent mechanical fault. Explains why I couldn't pick it up with a meter. Now to have a look at it - at least I know which wheel to look at!

Many thanks for your help.
