Its very fiddly to do - I tried it but didnt want to risk stripping a screw head or otherwise damaging it so eventually took it to my local backstreet guy when he was fitting the winter tyres (mandatory here in Germany).
He managed it but did say it wasn't straight forward to do.
The manual's description is not good enough. I'd recommend popping round to your local Ford and having a word with an engineer. They might tell you what to watch out for and the best way to get it done.

Do you know if he removed the lamp or do it in situ?

The handbook is not very helpful .
There are 2 holes in the bumper under each foglight ;
using an 8 mm socket and extension bar through the holes you undo the 2 screws holding the foglamp in place and withdraw the screws carefully ;
The handbook then shows the foglamp being pulled forward - what it doesn't show are 2 plastic clips on top of the foglamp which need to be pressed down to allow the foglamp out ;
For this you need something thin and flat to insert .
Getting the screws back in place again can also be very tricky .

Just had a quick look at mine , I undid a single screw from underneath,although it loosened the lamp it didn't come out but what I also did was remove the two lower screws from the wheel arch liner pull the liner back, you can then get your hand in behind the lamp twist and turn to remove holder.

Will have another look at this when it's not raining.

Update.

Can confirm the instructions in the handbook are next to useless.
On my model (2012 Titianium) there are two holes in the plastics under the front edge below the lamp, one is to access to the fog lamp height adjustment the other is the attachment screw (8mm socket required) with this removed the lamp is loose at the bottom but is still held at the top by two plastic tangs which need to be pressed down (easier said than done)
By removing the plastic cover under the front bumper (3 bolts 10mm socket & 6 bolts 8mm socket) you can access the fog lamp bulb and if you remove the two lower wheel arch liner bolts (8mm socket) you can reach the side lamp bulb.

Conclusion

Don't attempt to remove lamp unless it's already damaged.
Bulbs can be accessed from the wheel arch and below but not the sort of job you want to do on the side of the road, in my view ridiculous this sort of thing should be easily accessible for even the novice DIYer

cheers chris,im assuming it will be similar on the smax?

thats the problem chris isnt it,car makers are doing there upmost to stop basic home mechanics so the owner has to fork out dosh for simple jobs.

If the book is anything to go by it's worse on the Smax you need to remove the headlight first to get to the fog light. :(

My sister-in-law has a 2009 Galaxy 2 litre .
I found that to change the bulb in the off side fog lamp - you had no choice but to remove the lamp .There is some 'unit' or other just behind the lamp so no hope of getting your hand near the bulb .
And they call this 'Design'  >:(

Having just replaced the fog light unit because of a smashed lens on my mark 3 Galaxy I found it relatively easy to do, without having to remove any under engine tray or bumper skirt etc.

1.   Unscrewed the two 8mm bolts under the light unit, access them through the two purpose built holes in the underskirt.
2.   Pressed a screwdriver into the gap above the light unit in the vicinity of the two plastic clips.  It helped having the replacement unit to hand so I could accurately pin-point the area to prise.
3.   Wiggled the unit a bit as I prised and it came straight out.
4.   Unattached the parking light and fog light and removed the broken unit.

Removed in literally 2 minutes.

Fitting the new unit (Ã,£29.99 from ebay  :)) was even easier.  Simply connected the bulbs, pushed the unit into the hole and screwed up the bolts from underneath!

One tip though, before pushing the new unit into place, check the two metal clips are correctly seated on the chasis to receive the two bolts or youââ,¬â,,¢ll not be able to properly secure the unit.  One of mine fell down into the tray below and I couldnââ,¬â,,¢t reach it, had to end up dropping the bottom tray off anyway.  Oh well, looked upon it as an opportunity to clean some muck out of the tray!!!!

Good luck.

Hi Paul19469  welcome5

That's interesting I tried removing the o/s lamp with no success will have to have another look at it, am sure I only see one screw and the adjuster.

I can confirm that on my 2008 Gal, there are 2 x screws on each lamp unit to be removed (holes nearest the front of the bumper). On mine, they were 6mm and easily removed with a box spanner. Shining a torch in the gap above the lights showed the two plastic clips which need gently prising downwards. Took 10 minutes to change the side light bulbs to LEDs.

Hi Paul19469

Thanks Paul for your advice.

Fully agree with your breakdown of access to the Galaxy sidelight. Once those two bolts underneath are located the most difficult thing is:

1 do not lose the hex screw into the apron
2 checkout YouTube for an actual video of replacing foglamps and pay particular attention to where the two plastic clips are on the top edge of the lighting unit. I used a very thin flat screwdriver and an old dinner knife the prize the unit out and marked their location with a small dab of hi viz paint on the unit ready for next time.
3 ensure upon replacement that the boltholes are realigned before you re-install.

In all the job took around about 30 minutes and it does help if you put your vehicle upon to some portable ramps.
