Title: Front wipers not working...
Post by: jamiegreenlees.jg on July 02, 2013, 08:23:26 PM
Hi hoping someone can help please...
as the title suggests my front wipers don't work. I know that the spindles aren't stuck as i recently had to release them as they had seized. But i have double checked them and they turn with a small amount of resistance. The washers and the rear wipers work so i'm pretty sure it's not the fuses. Is there anything else it could be before i condemn the wiper motor??
Thanks
Jamie

Have you measured for a voltage at the motor? That would be the easiest way of deciding one way or the other...

At the motor! On a Mk1 you should have a 5 pin plug:

1= Main Supply
2= Fast-Wipe. 12v only when wipers on fast
3= Signal Voltage
4= Signal Voltage
5= Ground

Concentrate on checking for 12V on pin 1, the ground and, with the stalk on fast wipe, a 12V supply on 2.

Right... Checked it and found it as you said, 12V on 1 and ground and also 12V on 2 with the stalk on fast.
What i also found was if i moved the swiping arms when i reconnected the plug the wipers moved back to the home position. I unclipped the cover on the "controller" and found that part of the pcb looks dirty, possibly burnt. Is it worth me taking it all apart to get the pcb and try and clean it?? Or shall i try and find a replacement??
Thanks again.

Well electrically then it sounds like it's receiving what it should be, if it's burnt then realistically it's a component on the board that's fried and this is almost certainly what's causing your problem. You've nothing to loose by trying to clean it up, you may even be able to identify the faulty component!

That's kinda what i thought. As far as a replacement goes, does the motor have to be identical? I've been looking on a site that has motors on mechs that have 4 bolt holes rather than 3. Could i swap the motors over??
thanks

ps. the ones i've seen look similar but appear to have slightly different ref codes on them

No idea tbh - all I can tell you is that, obviously, the 4 hole assembly motor is a different part number to the 3 and therefore is gonna be different in some way. The Mk2 motor is very different as the electronics are all in the motor assembly (around 16 pins IIRC!).

Here's a full assembly on ebay: Link (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1999-VW-SHARAN-SEAT-ALHAMBRA-FORD-GALAXY-WIPER-MOTOR-WITH-MECHANISM-WARRANTY-/111103557747?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19de49c073)

I cant help you with that I'm afraid, why not email the seller your part number and check it matches?
