Title: * How To Detach A Used Seat Airbag !!
Post by: skippythompson on June 04, 2013, 12:31:02 AM

Hi everyone,

Can anyone share their experience in removing a deployed / used seat air-bag ?

The seat air-bag unit is held very tightly in place and I can't see any obvious way of accessing the rear backplate in order to detach it from the side of the seat. Does anyone know how exactly the air-bag should be released?

Any hints or tips would be GREATLY appreciated.

Finally...

1 - I know that I need to leave the car battery disconnected for about 30 mins or so, to discharge the system.

2 - I will have to reset the air-bag warning lamp afterwards.

THANK YOU FOR READING.

There are two allan-key headed bolts on the back of it. It's not the easiest of things to replace as you need to strip the seat down.

From memory,

1) Remove the seat from the car
2) remove the plastic side covers from the seat base
3) Cut the cable ties to free the cabling
4) undo the 6 bolts that hold the seat back to the base
5) unclip the long bar that pulls the leather/fabric tight - (yes, that will be a pain to refit later!)
6) Depending on how good you are with tight spaces you may be able to get your hand up to it now
7) Else, you'll need to unbend the pig-tail clips that hold the seat cover to the frame-work and detatch the padding (you can use cable ties as a substitute later)

Good luck!
