Title: Ouch!
Post by: Ex passatman on October 24, 2024, 04:46:36 PM
Well was in a bit of a quandry with the old girl. She's getting on a bit now
Had pads and discs all round for the MOT a couple of months ago.Do I get rid or bite the bullet and get the overdue cambelt change done and keep another year. Was browsing the site and seems less posts than there used to be indicating that these cars are either just old and being replaced or getting  more reliable with age 🙄.I went with the latter and will probably regret the nearly half a grand it cost me but hey ho cheaper than buying another hope I've made the right decision and not let my heart rule my head🤔

mines on 230k, has pissed me off all year with stupid electrical faults but no intention of getting rid !!   I have just sealed the front screen above drivers head, re-trimmed the door panels and on here now to learn how to change keyfob batteries (2nd time in 20 years ownership).    keep on rollin !

Yep my fob battery probably needs changing the remotes bit hit and miss.Im a bit hesitant as the Alhambra programming looks different and I don't want to cock anything up.

Your car, with its Tdi has the best engine, 300k miles possible with regular maintenance. Mine has 180k miles when the body rusted away, still smooth and powerful, with 50mpg possible pottering on holiday.

Referring to Ex Passatman's key fob - we had our battery changed at a VW workshop in Bavaria back in 2019, when we realised that the signal was weakening. We did not want to lock ourselves out of the vehicle. And then just recently the plastic shell failed so I ended up rebuilding the fob with a new shell. The job was not too difficult, and I even found a new SEAT logo to stick on the plastic shell to finish the job off. That is the second fob rebuild that I have done, my wife's C1 fob fell apart several years ago, so I had some practice on that.

Regarding Ex passatman's quandary - I am in the same boat, and I have decided to press on with the current fleet for the moment. I do not want a vehicle packed with unnecessary electronics; I do not want an electronic parking brake which requires a computer and software in order to change the rear brake pads. I do not want electronic tyre pressure sensors where it is virtually impossible to navigate a menu to find out how to turn off warnings after I have established that all the pressures were correct to begin with. And I do not want a television screen in the middle of the dashboard distracting me from the important job of actually driving the vehicle.

And I do not want to spend an eye-watering amount of money on even a second-hand vehicle only to find that it has even more electronic gremlins than the one it has replaced.

Sorry to rant, but I think we are heading in the wrong direction with these so-called modern vehicles. We have a cambelt change due early next year and I will 'bite the bullet' and get it done.

And I have just been reminded that in some cases a computer is required to change the car battery. AAAGH!!!
This is ludicrous.

I have a cambelt coming up soon. On 80k but VW did last change at 40k. Just spent £450 on new front mount struts, and I've had to do some welding repairs around bumper mounts.
Plan to keep the vehicle though still a lot of life in it yet!

Sorry if this response is a bit adrift, Albie, but have you checked with VW Customer Services concerning cambelt intervals? I have been changing religiously every four years, but VWCS recently advised me that the interval for the 2.0 BRT engine is 60K miles, which gives me a bit of 'wriggle room' and I intend to wait now for another year.

I am also interested in your comments about corrosion repairs. Front or rear bumper mounts?
