hi i have galaxy with a 1.9 tdi which runs fine around town but on a run it will go up to 80 90 mph then sometimes the power drops off and will go down to 50 mph if i put the clutch down the engine rev,s to the red line with the clutch in it won,t go above 50 mph if i switch the engine off and back on the power is back on .the turbo kicks in hard with very good performance has anyone got any ideas it,s a full service with all the filters changed

Do you do a lot of town driving or short start/stop trips? It sounds very much like you are suffering from sticky turbo vanes.

i do a bit of motor way and town driving when i bought the car it i noticed that one of the pipes the the egr valve was not attached i think it went to wot looks like a diaphram if it is the the turbo vanes how easy are they to clean

Yes you are probably suffering from a boost issue, under but most likely over boost, same symptoms but different fix.
To confirm which you would need to read the stored fault codes using Vagcom/VCDS

Assuming that you have overboost (most common) then you have some choices.
1. Use a cleaner like Innotec. This does require removal of the exhaust from the turbo

2. Completely remove turbo and disassemble and clean.

3. Replace turbo with reconditioned unit.
EGR vacuum pipe disconnected and plugged this is not uncommon but not strictly legal
Some members have found that better performance and MPG are achieved with EGR disconnected

hi just an update on my loss of power
got hold of some innotec turbo cleaner and the car seems to run better not having to go through the gears to keep the power on .took the car for a run from swindon to poole around 75 miles car ran really well 140 miles then the last few miles it did it again . it,s 99% better i will buy some more and give another go had a bit of a leak on the gasket so lost a bit of it when i did .will keep you post

Planning on doing mine this weekend, kit sitting in the hallway currently. Any things I should watch out for? Should I thread lock the exhaust nuts back on? And what way should the vane mech move when I'm under the car? Should I be pulling it towards me or pushing it away (either way currently there's only a couple of mm movement).

The arm/lever pulls down against spring pressure, have a look at my video below, this will give you an idea of how much movement there should be.

thanks chris, my galaxy appears to be gunged up then. Will try the innotec first before going to a full strip-down. fingers crossed.
any views on the loctite? haynes says I should (but helpfully not what kind - I assume blue)
Never used loctite on the exhaust nuts, they usually get pretty rusted so don't tend to work loose
crikey, that was a bit of a mare getting in to loosen the third nut off (second was a pain too truth be told). New 3/8th's ratchet for me tomorrow, mine's finally given up the ghost. Thankfully nothing sheared, clearance non existant, but cleaning the turbo tomorrow so hopefully all will go well (and it'll work!) had a feel of the turbine, feels solid no wobble so hopefully innotec will do the trick.
You may also need to consider checking/cleaning EGR valve as this will not help the situation if it's also clogged up.
If you remove the air charge pipe from the EGR valve and with the aid of a mirror look through the valve, this will give you a view whether you need to clean it aswell.

Well, stuff went in, used a plastic template rather than the cardboard. Stayed in pretty well (though not a lot came out!). VNT actuator was siezed in the down position, after 10 mins I was able to get it moving and after another 10 I had it moving freely throughout it's travel. Flushed with can 2 (smells pretty like cellulose thinners) and put her back together, checking the VNT actuator travel was still the full range.
She seemed pretty good at the short test drive after, no hesitancy at-all at 2200 rpm. Not put cleaner 3 in yet, I plan on getting a new filter to put that in. Will nned to see how she performs on a longer distance.
Well, still going into limp mode if I push her hard, we'll see how she does after a longer run. Might have to resort to the turbo off option after-all. Read on some other threads about disconnecting the EGR pipe and feeding a hose in there, would this get closer to the VNT mech? Not sure how much actually gets into the mech when you put it in the front!
LOL! Just looked at the EGR pipe inlet compared to location of turbo, think I'd need one of those keyhole surgery tube things to get it in the right place so looks like a strip-down's the way to go.
