Title: fans
Post by: regw on March 10, 2022, 03:22:07 PM
Hmm, aint been here for a while
the old forum is looking all pretty n spruced up aint it?
very nice.

Anyway

fans

I haven't been using  the old thing very much and recently have been aware of a fan sometimes running when cold and no air con or heater switched on.

When I had the bonnet up, I saw it was the twin fanned rad in front of the engine
and didn't spend enough time to see if this is the actual rad or the air con cooler

It comes on then goes off again and the car's running fine ( touch wood)
it may be a normal previously overlooked function for all I know
just thought I'd check in case its a signal summat's ailing

TIA

Cheers!

No there shouldn't be any fan running from startup however if the battery is pretty flat I have seen the fan controller glitch and put them on. I've also seen the relay for the second fan weld itself on but since the fans turning back off then it's unlikely to be the start of that. I wouldn't be overly concerned though, its better they are running when they shouldn't be rather then when they should :)

I had an issue with ours last year, heard what I thought both fans coming on randomly for about 20 seconds then going off again.
On closer inspection it was only one fan coming on but on the high speed.
The fan not working had gone open circuit, replaced the motor and back to normal both fans running on slow speed with aircon on AUTO

Had exactly the same here - slow speed stopped working completly, so the high speed was coming on all the time. It then started to intermittently make a horrible noise and failed to turn, suspect this was an indication it was on its last legs. Replaced both of them and all good after that.

You should find VCDS will tell you if the fan isn't working, On mine (petrol) Forscan would let you run the fans from the laptop for testing etc without the engine running, and was logging codes for problems with both fans.

I gather the 2.3 and diesels mostly use the same fans, if you look on them there should be a part number, both fans are the same as well. They unscrew from the shroud by 4 bolts. Didn't seem particually easy to get the shroud off the car so I just removed them from the shround with them in place.

Thanks for the replies
I was bit sloppy detail wise on the last post so today had a better look
Its not a double fan but a big single one
I started the motor from cold, no heater or air con switched on inside the cabin
and shortly after, this fan spun up pretty fast but soon slowed down and shut off again
It's probably a normal process for all I know but as I said before never really noticed it

If its a single fan I'd expect it to have two running speeds, slow and fast. Fast would usually be the one you'd notice as it makes a right racket. If its keeping a sensible temperature I wouldn't worry too much about it. It may be the case that the slow speed only comes on with A/C working, You'd need another diesel with that setup to compare to.

The twin fan setup is obvious when it fails as one fan doesn't come on as it should. If you wanted to be sure, have a scan with VCDS as mine was logging failures against both fans when checked (the fast one was working most of the time, but occasionally sounded like it had siezed momentarally).
