Title: Where is it more correct to install racks under auto repair.
Post by: savoj on November 11, 2021, 09:26:57 AM
Hello.
You need to put the car on something for a week to repair the front suspension. What is the best place to install the props.

On the chassis rails. If you look behind the front wheels, you'll have the cill on the outside then some box section (the outrigger) and then a box of metal that runs to the back of the car - anywhere on that box section is where to put the stands.

As a general rule, put them as close to the end you are working on as possible. Ie, if you are working on the front then you want the stands as far forward as you can. The most dangerous part is during the second lift, when one side is already on the stand and you are jacking the other side up so take extra care at that point as its not uncommon for the weight to topple the stand or slide off - only jack it up as much as absolutely necessary and if need be, raise each side in stages to stagger the amount of lift on the jack.

Final point is that you can never be too safe - once its on the stands slightly lower the jack but keep it in place to also support and once the wheels are off slide them under the car as well to allow crush space if it were to fall off for whatever reason.

Depending on what front suspension work you are doing, jacking up on the point in the photo you've posted won't work.

Jack up the car.
Put in a axle stand on the chassis rails.
Take off wheel & put under car also.
Lower Jack to let the axle take the weight.

Repeat for other side.

Such good advice here, especially the tips about jacking up only as much as needed when the other side is on the stand, and also putting the wheel under the sills as extra protection in case anything does go wrong.

I remember the days when I used to drive up a high kerb and get under the car that way to do an oil change hehe

When I had mine I jacked up in that area but put stands where Mirez suggested, on chassis rails.
