Going up fairly steep hills i got knocking. reducing speed or dropping down gear made the knocking stop.
Seems that it is at higher load it happens.
Pulled over at service station to check driveshafts and noticed my intermediate shaft was quite warm to touch.Had done about 3 hrs drive at that point.
After the reading i have done i suspect the inner joints of the shafts but should i change the whole shaft or just the inner joint? keeping the shaft?
Also is it normal for the intermediary shaft to get the hotter side of warm?
Theres a roll restrictor on the bottom of the gearbox with a lump of rubber in the back end of it where it secures to the car, I'd have a look and make sure you don't have excessive movement on it. If its failed it can allow enough movement to split the cv boot apart on the nearside, i can't imagine it would do the other side much good either.
I would suspect the inner CV joints of the outer shafts rather then the intermediate shaft, generally the intermediate shaft is either OK or broken - there isn't really a middle ground with them.
Heat wise, yes the gearbox will transfer heat down the shaft so it will warm up, especially after a 3hr drive.
thanks guys, sadly I'm a little stuck was going to get some shafts until i checked the price here in France. last quote was 270 for one side SKF. !!!

Do you mean one of these https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/sharan+syncro+4motion/sha/2005-406/1/199-199020/?
I had wondered if I had a mount issue as when either going over bumps in gear or upon putting foot o or taking off accelerator say in 2nd or 3r I'll get a strange crunching noise.. very light. two mechanics have just dismissed it so far.
