Title: Fuses missing, central fuse box
Post by: simonlap on March 27, 2013, 09:52:05 AM
2002 MK2 1.9 Tdi auto. I plugged a dodgy connection into cigar socket in the front, blew fuse number 7. Whilst replacing fuse, noticed fuse 1 and fuse 11 missing. Haynes book of lies tells me that 1 is engine management and 11 is headlight washer (without trailer) Trailer. Which part of engine management does number 1 protect? I will be fitting a tow bar when snow stops, will I just throw a fuse into number 11 and expect the towing electrics to work? At the moment, the tow electrics are stuffed into a plastic bag tied under the rear of the car.
Cheers, Si.

F1- Engine Ignition, Engine Electronic Controls, Instrument Cluster Memory. Specifically, 11 is a supply for the Crankcase ventilation heater (whatever that refers to) and a supply into the ECU which looks like a memory circuit.
F11 - Headlight Washing, Towbar

First, identify if the socket can accept a fuse - look where the spades of the fuse go into, if the slot is designed for a fuse then both sides will have metal, if not then only one side will.

Secondly, 99% of tow bars won't utilise F11 - only the factory towbar use's it for the NEW style electrics. If you have the older, more standard, 7 pin towing socket then it won't be there. If you have the more modern and factory fitted 13 pin socket then it will be there as the 12V Supply.

The tow electrics are standard 7 pin socket, noty sure weather previous owner wired it up and took the towbar off beforew sale, both fuse holders have the metal strip on both sides. As it runs fine without number 1 fuse, will I just leave it alone?

I'd try one and see what happens to be honest...

My Mk2 TDI has no no,1 or no,11 either.
Book says number 1 is for the V6 engine only, I have aftermarket towing electrics but doesn't use fuse 11
