Hi Reuben
Not an expert on the ECUs but I think if you can get a part number off the old/failed one
it will help find a replacement  with the correct firmware in it.
Failing that, someone with the same model and spec might tell you

You are looking for 98VW-12A650-XX as a part number for a Mk1 and XM2F-12A650-XX for a Mk2 - a year 2000 could be either.
The XX needs to match your existing ECU really as there are revisions throughout the production run.

This one is a possible contender year wise

Nah they have that advertised wrongly - that's a BCM not an ECU.

BCM looks after the functions of the car (Lights, windows, mirrors etc)
ECU looks after the running of the engine.

The Vin in the first photo comes back as a MK2.

Microcat shows the part number of YM21 19A366 EB against your vin for the module - engine immobiliser. Though I'm not convinced thats the ecu you actually need. A photo of the connector or bit thats missing might help confirm that?

http://catcar.info/ford/?lang=en will allow you to check by vin number for suitible parts as well.

Note that I'd suspect you'd need to program the keys into the new ecu - I'm not 100% sure where the key info is stored (maybe @Mirez could advise on that) but as far as I know, programs like Forscan will only work if you have at least 1 working pats chip to gain access in the first place?

Immobiliser keys are stored within the ECU and the PATS module depending on year and engine. Most Galaxy's have the PATS module squirreled away, deep in behind the instrument cluster requiring the dashboard to be removed for access. I'm not super familiar with the 2.3 setup but I would imagine its the same kind of thing. With the diesel engines there doesn't appear to be any communication between the PATS module and the ECU however I wouldn't expect that to be the case with the 2.3

The mk1 is the only one I've had the dash out of, and the ecu in that (although it was a 2.0 petrol) is underneath the crossmember that the cluster sits above. Can't see you'd be able to steal it easily out of the car in that position, as it looks to me like you'd need to remove the dash to get to it to me? Hence why I suggested a photo of the missing ecu location might be a good idea

The blue circled bit is what I'd suspect is the ecu being referred to (the one that controls the engine etc). Granted this is a mk1 in the photo but I doubt its changed much (if anything the dash in the mk2 is more difficult to remove as there is more of it!).

https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/ashgrovewickford this seller I've used for a couple of Galaxy bits and may be worth contacting. Really suspect your going to want a matching pats chip from the car the ecu is removed from to stand much chance of getting it working without major hassles or a locksmith though. Not tried it personally and its the kind of thing thats hard to find info online about, so you may be into the give it a try and see what you get. Breaker might be able to advise on that.

Morning Brian, so what you've circled there is where the PATS module sits which is the immobiliser control unit not the engine ECU. I've only ever known them to be positioned in the engine bay, behind the battery.

Reuben, I think it's also a good idea to clarify what bits missing! :)

That looks more like the fan controller to me that sits down the front edge of the vehicle. I will check mine and post back later.

Had another look but then realised mine is a mk2 that doesn't have the fan controller and yours probably doesn't either. I'll have a look at home tomorrow to see if I can find any dirtier info, as I can't even see a connector like that anywhere round that bit of the engine on mine.

Hard to tell location from pictures but looks like back of engine in scuttle area, is that correct? That plug looks like what goes to wiper motor to me

Might help to describe what you're seeing at the same time. Specifically if it fails to crank over, what does the led on the drivers door do, what lights do you get coming on thecdashboard etc.

Pictures of the car don?t help you need to get pictures of the are that has something missing and include any plugs in that area also
