Title: So I pickup the ‘new’ dad wagon this week...
Post by: KingyMAK on May 17, 2021, 10:16:52 AM
So Iââ,¬â,,¢m saying goodbye to the trust Carat PD130 at only ~170k.
Slowly becoming uneconomical repairs each year, due to corrosion, and so forth.

I found an ââ,¬Ëœ06 Alhambra thatââ,¬â,,¢s decked out, at only 87k for pennies.
Itââ,¬â,,¢s the 2.0 140 engine, so Iââ,¬â,,¢m assuming Iââ,¬â,,¢ll be getting the balance shaft issue sorted, too.
FSH, the lot.

Itââ,¬â,,¢s going to be a shame to say bye to the old ââ,¬ËœDad-Wagonââ,¬â,,¢, but 2.0 is on its way now & I canââ,¬â,,¢t look back forever! 😂

Balance shaft and oil pump drive on them isnââ,¬â,,¢t it?

Aye; but the shaft issue, I meant the whole thing really.
Absolutely mental they did that redesign on the PD engines, then fluffed up so bad with this!

Given the age I wonder if itââ,¬â,,¢s already been sorted on it,did VAG ever issue a quality enhancement for this or was it a case of only getting modified parts if customer had issues?

Is this the problem some had with the splines on the oil pump being a bit weedy and failing? I'm sure I saw somewhere it was only the Ford version that suffered with this problem,could be wrong though🤔

If I remember correctly it was a hexagonal drive and shaft didnââ,¬â,,¢t penetrate that much causing it to round off

Don't think the Alhambra or Sharan 2.0 BRT has this issue. I thought it was on A4s and Passat's whatever that engine code is.

All the initial 2.0 TDiââ,¬â,,¢s had this issue, even up to about 2010-2011 when they changed it in the engines after that.
Failure was among geared AND chain driven models.

Iââ,¬â,,¢ve yet to pick it up from the forecourt, so I donââ,¬â,,¢t have the paperwork as of yet.
Iââ,¬â,,¢m going to hope itââ,¬â,,¢s actually been sorted, but realistically with less than 90k on it for pottering about, I canââ,¬â,,¢t see it having been done. 😭
Never a recall/enhancement, as it wasnââ,¬â,,¢t an instant thing that would cause lots of failures.
It just did it slowly.
The modified parts were either;
A new hex key that was solid (VAG used a hollow hex key... 🤦)
A new balance shaft/oil pump all together. (Same issues eventually!)
But;
They did release another fix, which was to replace the single balance shaft in the unit with a stronger key way, also.
