I recently changed my steering rack and after there was a loud crack and now clunks and thumps most of the time when jacked up there is movement in the wheel up and down
Are the CV joints ok?
When did it ââ,¬Ëœcrackââ,¬â,,¢?
The clunk and thump, though, does the wheel have only vertical play at top and bottom, or is there play all around?
Wheel bearing/track rod/tie rod/bushes/etc., these can all create play/clunking/thumping, cracks donââ,¬â,,¢t usually happen without a break of something.
The play is just up and down the clunk happened pretty much first time took the car out after changing the rack ive changed the lower arm and trackrod ends made a little improvement
When you say movement up and down do you mean the wheel actually moves up and down or you get play when rocking wheel while holding at 12 and 6 oââ,¬â,,¢clock positions? If itââ,¬â,,¢s play when rocking can you get an assistant to rock wheel while you look to see where the play is?
The crack noise is what concerns me almost sounds like something has broke rather than something with play in it.
Could it possibly be one of the bolts that secures the rack to the car has snapped?
Other possible cause is if you've had the bolt that secures the roll restrictor to the gearbox snap. That produces clunking noises and will make a cracking sound if it snaps. Mine did exactly that a couple of weeks ago. Easy to check as you can see the movement in the engine if so.
Is the undertray still on the car? If so, half of the bolt on mine was lying inside it.
Sorry for the late reply bolts on the rack were ok changed the driver side drive shaft and inner shaft as well has made a lot of difference going to change the top strut mounts as well they were only done last year and o think that will be it sorted
Iââ,¬â,,¢d wager inner cv joint?
