Ok was doing some fiddling with my spare wheel and rather than put it back in the carrier I left it out for a couple of days and just wound the carrier back up to stop it wagging about. When I came to wind the wheel back in I got the dreaded clicking noise.Assuming it was the common plastic cog that had gone I whipped the top off and it had actually been replaced with the modified metal one.On closer inspection the cable had become snagged in the holder. So I stripped it down re greased and made sure the cable was nice and straight on the drum and all is now working well.I think I must have wound it up to quickly without the weight of the wheel on it and it just run off true so may be worth remembering if you wind it back with no load on it.Well chuffed saved myself 26 quid and it was really straight forward to do (even for me) if anyone has to have to replace the gear.
Nice one my friend, I will grease mine this weekend and also another tip is to make sure you change the tyre every now and then because the rubber does perish. Also keep it nicely pumped up
