Post by: pa-larkin on April 15, 2021, 08:52:27 AM

Advice needed when I start my car 05 Galaxy 1.9d there is a strange rattily rumbly noise, when the clutch pedal is depressed the noise stops. Any ideas?

Had new one fitted Sep 2018 it's only done just over 12,000 since!
Strange how it started all of sudden, makes that awful noise on tick-over and stops when clutch pedal is down, can hear it slightly whilst driving.

Sounds like the DMF;

Depending on who fitted and the manufacturer, you may still be within warranty, but I wouldnââ,¬â,,¢t hold your breath.

I have replaced a LUK one from a bmw this week that was fitted in feb 19 and has done 20k miles. Excessive play and leaking grease. Just one of them things that can happen unfortunately.

You could try contacting whoever made it and seeing if they will do anything for you. I was lucky as luk replaced mine free of charge,I had it off anyway due to rebuilding engine so no Labour they just sent me a replacement and had faulty one back. You need the receipt though proving age and mileage or you wonââ,¬â,,¢t stand a chance.

Copied from Haynes dot com web page:

Symptoms of a worn DMF include increasing vibrations, especially through the clutch pedal.

You may also hear a rattle, which will disappear when you depress the clutch. DMFs can last more than 100,000 miles but may wear out in as little as 20,000 - it depends on the quality of the part and your driving style.

Many mechanics recommend changing the dual mass flywheel whenever the clutch is replaced, because itââ,¬â,,¢s accessed more easily when this job is being carried out, but thereââ,¬â,,¢s a good chance the DMF will be in good health.

The problem is, you just donââ,¬â,,¢t know until you remove it, and itââ,¬â,,¢s considered a false economy to leave it in place and change only the clutch.

my 2003 mk2 1.9TDI has done 195.000 miles and the clutch feels an sounds still fine. Makes me wonder what kind of flywheel this is. It is still the original.
Only thing i notice is some play in the driveline and the intermediate driveshaft is replaced recently because of the worn splines.
