Title: Is it the clutch?
Post by: Russats on March 11, 2021, 10:05:20 AM
So pulling away, the ride is very juddery. Itââ,¬â,,¢s fine once you get going.
Also on Tickover the whole car is shaking very slightly.
The peddle comes up a fairway before it bites.

Does this sound like the clutch is on its way out?

Oh and sometimes I canââ,¬â,,¢t get it reverse without the engine off.

Yes, I thought so too.

Anyone want to help me? Iââ,¬â,,¢ve found a very detailed video. Lol this is on a 2.2, I assume itââ,¬â,,¢s pretty much the same?

What sort of weight would we be talking about here, 250kg or so, that sort of range?

If I recall correctly the gearbox on the 2.0tdci is around 30kg.

If you have tools, axle stands,a jack and time then itââ,¬â,,¢s not beyond the diyer. I have done several clutches on my drive over the years. I did my old x type jag a few years ago. Had to change gearbox anyway as 1st was knackered but if I was just doing clutch and flywheel I would slide gearbox back and rest on subframe giving just enough room to change the clutch components. Worst one I did was a little Renault Clio the subframe couldnââ,¬â,,¢t be dropped as captive nut spinning so I slid the box back,no room for alignment tool so I went the superglue route for aligning. Worked a treat.👍

I find a couple of 4ââ,¬Â lengths of threaded bar with a slot on the end are a great help to locate gearbox on and slide back in. Once in place and you have some bell housing bolts thightened the bar can be removed with a flat blade screwdriver.

I didn't weigh it but the one on my mondeo felt more like three times that.  The DMF and clutch felt more like 30kg.  If you assume 500cc of steel in one, it comes to about 38kg, steel being 7700kg/cubic metre.

Are you saying the box or the clutch and flywheel come to 38kg?

The box in the xtype couldnââ,¬â,,¢t have been more than 30-40 as I was able to lift it up without getting a hernia.

Iââ,¬â,,¢d love to attempt it myself, saw a guy do a Mondeo on the floor, he didnââ,¬â,,¢t remove the subframe. Seems to better way to do it, if you donââ,¬â,,¢t have a lift ramp.

Definitely a better way on the mondeo/x type cars is leave subframe in place and just slide the box off, from memory you need to lower frame slightly thatââ,¬â,,¢s all.

Clutch and flywheel on my Mondeo.  I could lift it but is wasn't the same as on my Herald. 8 -)  I could lift the gearbox as well but I _really_ wouldn't want to be underneath it if something went wrong.  I would guess it was _well_ in excess of 100lbs.

Is the X type RWD?  The Mondeo/Galaxy box has the diff built in.

No mine was the 2.0 TD with same engine and box as the mondeo so diff inside the box.

Essentially it was a mondeo estate in marginally posher clothing
