Depends entirely on how much of an oil leak and where its coming from... never heard of one needing the gearbox out though! Where abouts roughly are we talking?

Hummm there is nothing "behind" the gearbox as its transverse mount - in fact there is nothing I can think of that would require the box to be removed as the sump is removable with it in situ... get a second opinion from another garage!

Without seeing it, it's very tricky to comment but I would speculate that it's coming from the EGR system and dripping down which is fairly common.

When I had injector wiring replaced my rocker cover started to leak badly at rear right corner despite of the new rocker cover seal. They replaced seal again and still was leaking, they tried to use a bit of gasket sealant around seal and still was leaking. At the end I had to buy new rocker cover from VW for over 130quid just to sort it out (there is new design of the cover because of this issue).
