Could anyone confirm if the Stop - Check coolant message on a mk2 is only triggered by the level sensor and once it comes on will stay on until restart? Comes on with the red icon at the top right of the centre display as well (wavy lines with a thermometer) at the same time and beeping. Its a mk2 2.3 if that makes any difference?
I suspect its the pattern expansion tank as the connector doesn't fit too well causing the issue rather than a lack of coolant or over temperature. The gauge sits at 90 degrees once its up to temp and stays there too.
The temp sensor also sends this message up;
Had this issue the other week.
I could often hear the fan & aux pump running a little longer after shutting off the car; of started up straight away would send the ââ,¬Å"Stop - Check Coolantââ,¬Â error message.
If switched off and back on again, it used to clear or after driving a few meters.
If left for half hour or so, itââ,¬â,,¢d be fine.
Cheers, will have a look to see what might be causing the problem. Did think it was the dodgy connector on it, but that suggests it might not be.
Always worth a scan on VCDS or other decent scan tool before buying parts or going to garages for work!
Just to check, is the coolant level ok when the engine is cold as well as when it is hot?
Yes its not losing any either. It typically does it towards the end of a journey if at all. Seems symptomatic of it tripping due to a bad connection or high sensor reading that corrects itself. Switch off and back on message goes, but it stays until you do that, even if the bottle sensor is unplugged and reconnected makes no difference.
Sorted it, whilst the connector was pushed home fully, one of the pins from it had come out of the connector. Nothing fault code wise logged on diagnostics and temp shown on there hovers around 82-90 degrees so that side looks fine.

I wonder if it might be worth giving the connector a little clean with contact cleaner and possibly even putting a tie wrap around it if it is prone to popping off

I had to take the connector off the wires and replaced it with a couple of small spade terminals, its broken too much to fix it, and keeping the plastic in place with a cable tie wouldn't help as its the pins that are the problem (they pop out of the plastic connector inside the actual connector block)
