Title: noisy starting!
Post by: dingdongdo on February 20, 2013, 05:57:24 PM
well the old gal took me up north at the weekend and did well returning well over 40mpg which for a high milage old car is probably as good as can be expected.
can any body else who has a high mileage tdi mk1 tell me if theirs is also very rattly for the first few seconds from cold? (169k). its almost as if it starts too well, as soon as i turn the key its away but top end is obviously dry and would probably benefit from a couple of revolutions to splash some of the old texas tea before starting.
is this normal?

My 97 tdi has 167k on clock, starts first time and sounds the same all the time...maybe slightly quieter when warm but nothing really noticeable...apart from a good de-coke to loosen engine parts I would probably let me ol jalopy idle for 10 secs or so before setting off, like you say to splash some Texas tea on components....after all, I personally need my morning cuppa more than ever now and no longer spring into action the moment my eyes open!! :-[

If the rattle is only for a few seconds may be bottom end bearings worn? has it been like that since you acquired the car or has it come on suddenly.
Do you know if the engine has suffered turbo seal failure at any time? as this could be a consequence of this, where by the engine is revving it's nuts off with little or no oil in the sump.

only had the car for a couple of weeks so not sure about previous issues, the car runs fine and has plenty of power. if it might be big ends or similar then i think i will have to live with it until it commits suicide as thats big bucks!
sounds mad but could too much oil cause anything like this? whoever did the service before i got it has overfilled it, not sure by how much in real quantity terms as i can only go off dipstick level.

if its got to much oil in it can cause blown oil seals ect ect. could do with the oil draining and the correct amount putting in tbh. if you know the oil is recent you could reuse the origional oil puting in the correct amount :)

Diesel engines are always a little noisier when cold and on a high mileage one some rattlings expected... but then it shouldn't be that loud or for that long

it does seem to rev up a little as its started and rattle, then this soon fades away, there is a little blue smoke then it clears but no more than most other diesels. i think until the weather and my bank balance improve its just going to have to rattle!!  lol.

just to add, after having read other topics and checking my car that the cruise control, and aux heater dont work either! Was quite pleased with the car to start but its looking a bit of a demic atm....

To the untrained ear diesel engine noises can be daunting, it may be there's nothing to worry about, but there are conditions that would make the engine more noisier than normal.

Advice to all owners would be to do a diagnostic scan with VCDS or similar (see knowledge base for details) as this can help with a lot of the common faults on these cars.

Also worth mentioning the TDi has very specific oil requirements so make sure its got the right type!

thanks for all the advice i have now downloaded the software, now about to order the lead.
in the meantime i have noticed that when i start the car from cold it does rev up to 1500rpm before dropping back to normal, is this right?

That's high no wonder the engine rattles, doesn't give the oil a chance to get around.
An increased idle speed can be caused by a faulty coolant sensor.
See what comes up after scan.

scan update, not sure if i was doing it right but used vagcam which sounds like a porn site but found a few errors and cleared them before using the car as advised, the only one i cant clear is telling me the left hand abs speed sensor is faulty.
the air con now seems ok, however p0605 did return after using the car, also it does not find the control module for the aux heater.
i think p0605 relates to the turbo, any ideas?

P0605 is an internal memory fault
What was the text given next to the code.

The mk 1 booster heater is not connected to the diagnostics
