Having a a little alternator trouble, about 10 days ago the 'Alternator Workshop' light came on when I started the engine, it went off within a minute and did the same next time I started it. After that good as gold for a week and then Friday the same thing happened again so this morning I picked up a Delco Remy exchange alternator and fitted it and seemed to be all good. Late this afternoon the fault came back, exactly the same as before and would clear itself in a short space of time and this evening all has been good. I've been at it with the multimeter and it is charging and the battery is in good shape.
Am I correct in thinking that with the ignition on 2nd click (engine not running) I should have 12v across the the 2 pin connector that goes in the back of the alternator? I have 0.1 but can get 12v between one of the pins and ground.
One thing I notice is when the fault is present I can hear a relay in the fuse box going mad, not sure if this is a symptom or a cause though.

Donââ,¬â,,¢t worry about exciter circuit for now open the fuse box by battery I suspect you will find heat damage on the cables in there. You have classic symptoms of failed fuse box
Been there and done it, all soldered up a few years ago.
Actually Johnny I am going to correct that last reply as you were pretty damn close. A few years ago I caught my fuse box in the early stages of failure - before it melted it but it was slightly deformed. The cables were cut back and new crimps soldered on and everything bolted up and closed up ok, been fine ever since.
Was just checking things over again and unbolted the connectors to give them a clean and underneath the alternator cable nut is a fatigue fracture that was hard to see before removing the nut so I guess there must be a little movement in there and it would be prudent to replace the box.

Whatââ,¬â,,¢s the condition of the rest of the fuse box and connections? If all ok you might get away with just changing the fuse.
