Title: What the hell is going on here then???!?!
Post by: Adam Boswell on November 16, 2018, 08:28:05 PM
Went to roll down the drivers electric window today.....strange sort of chirping noise and the hazards flash....window does nothing.

Seems somewhat odd!

Check the wiring between a post and door, sounds like broken wiring shorting across circuits to me.

If you trigger the self test on the alarm it makes that chirping sound - it should do it every time you open or close a door or operate any of the alarm switches. Its triggered by operating any of the alarm switches rapidly within a set time. It times out after about 30 seconds of nothing changing if i remember correctly, Its probably that being triggered due to a short circuit somewhere. (i've had similar with the bonnet switch on other cars when they start to fail and it starts the hazards flashing due to it making and breaking contact frequently)

I'd say as above - you have broken wires in a door most likely cause. Probably drivers door but check the rest including the boot ones. May just be insulation broken off the wires and allowing them to touch.

Had a look at the wires going from the door to the a pillar .......some clown has made some bodge repairs in the past, wires taped together, there is a brown wire that is loose and completely unattached to anything!

Looks like I have a bit of soldering to do!

Question, it looks like a big round plug with a screw in sleeve going into the a pillar, is that right? Looks like I can unplug it, take the door panel off and get decent access to sort all the dodgy looking wires....that sound like I'm on the right lines?

Hi Adam, if its the big thick brown then that's the primary ground!

Yes you are on the right lines, there is a full how-to in the reference library on here.

Almost identical to the picture in the how to guide, wonder if this will cure my dodgy wing mirror indicator and interior lights not working too. Will sort tomorrow(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/15dd78e10a180941951b22eaf04edd63.jpg)

Yes the plug just unscrews from the socket on A pillar,of it has been bodged before I would advise getting some lengths of wire and some heat shrink to extend the wires. Also far easier to take door card off and remove loom from door so you can repair on the bench and refit.

When plugging back in to A pillar socket make sure it is fully lined up before doing the screw back up as the terminal blocks in socket can get pushed out.

Right, had to chop some of the earth cable out and replace with a new bit of wire, but window is working again.

Indicator is still playing up and the interior lights don't work but the rest of the wires look a bit ruined, so job for another day is take the door apart and rewire the loom chopping out anything that looks dubious and replacing.

Whoever has repaired it before wants shooting!

I've seen worse.

This was the state of my previous MK1 after someone prior "fixed" it. Melted the boot that covers the wires (hence all the bathroom silicone) and made a right mess of repairing the wires (which had unsurprisingly broken again).

Once the whole lot had been replaced with new bits of wire, it got rid of a number of faults, including making it possible to actually lock the doors again.
