Dear All
My Ford Galaxy (Zetec Automatic 2004 Mk2 2.3L) has engine management light on the dashboard. I took it to a local garage whose diagnoses points to the ECU. As such, I would like to take the ECU out and send it away for testing /repair. Though I can see that it is located on the RHS near the car battery yet I donââ,¬â,,¢t know how to remove it. Any instructions/ YouTube links etc would be appreciated.
The garage mechanic also suggested that the fault could also be due to the corroded wire between the ECU and the gearbox. Thatââ,¬â,,¢s the second thing I would like to trace and replace it. Any wiring diagrams / leads would be helpful.
Thank you very much.
Kind regards
Dennis
Hi Dennis
What fault codes were collected when you had the vehicle scanned? as points to the ECU sounds like they don't know what the problem is, apart from the EML light what other problems are you having?
The ECU to the right of the battery is the transmission ECU
The engine ECU is located behind the instrument cluster when you have the Ford 2.3 engine.
Hi Chrispb
Thank you very much for your response. I had to leave the car with the garage for half a day to get the fault fixed. When I returned they told me that they were unable to help as the diagnostic tool was showing gearbox and ECU fault. They did not give me any further explanation or the fault code and suggested that I took it to people who could fix it. When I asked them about the location of the ECU, they pointed to the one on RHS by the battery. You are right in saying that they did not know what they were doing.
I have however, bought a small OBD 11/EOBD scanner thatââ,¬â,,¢s showing code P0768 ââ,¬Å"Shift Solenoid D Electricalââ,¬Â. Wonder if this could be the problem?
I would also like to know, if the gearbox oil has anything to do with the EMA as another mechanic suggested that it could be either due to not enough or dirty oil.
The car is still driveable.
Kind regards
Dennis
Hi Chrispb
Yesterday there was some thumping noise when I put it into reverse gear and then from D to P.

Just further commentary that the ECU's on modern cars rarely fail, I would rule out everything else before you rule in the ECU.
Hi Mirez
Thank you for your suggestion. I have done some search on the net against the OBD code P768 and this is what I got"
What are the common causes of code P0768
ââ,¬Â¢ Low transmission fluid level
ââ,¬Â¢ Dirty transmission fluid
ââ,¬Â¢ Transmission control module
ââ,¬Â¢ Shift solenoid defective
ââ,¬Â¢ Shift solenoid circuit open/short
ââ,¬Â¢ Bad grounds
ââ,¬Â¢ ECM
ââ,¬Â¢ Corroded connections or pins
ââ,¬Â¢ Wring issue (corrosion, chafed, melted)
What are the symptoms of code P0768 ?
ââ,¬Â¢ Not shifting
ââ,¬Â¢ Drivability issues
ââ,¬Â¢ Harsh shifts
ââ,¬Â¢ Erratic shifts
ââ,¬Â¢ High engine RPM
I will start with oil change and go from there. For systems I do have some mentioned here.
Thank you for your support. I appreciate it. My thanks to Chris as well who
When your draining the oil I'd suggest you let it go cold in whatever you catch it in, and have a look what it looks at like that (drain it with the gearbox hot, but let it cool). If its gone towards looking like Tar then you know its not in a good state.
Given the shift solenoids have to shut and open the oil, if the oil is sticky (or stickier than it should be) then the solenoids will struggle to move in it. You may find you have to do two changes to have most of it changed out as well, as some will stay in the system. New oil will help to break up whats already in the system, so its generally recommended to change as much as you can, run it for a week or so and then do another change.
Hi Brianh
Thank you for your input. I will keep that in mind. It does make sense.
Kind regards
