Title: What gauge wire for door loom on Sharan
Post by: Sangareth on June 01, 2018, 09:18:49 PM
Hi,

First time poster here, and apologies if this is a silly question(!)

We recently bought a second-hand Mk1 Sharan (2005 Sport) and noticed that the rear near-side door didn't lock, and the electric window didn't work (the previous owner told us about the window, but apparently never noticed that it didn't lock using the central locking). Anyway, to cut a long weekend short, I eventually diagnosed the fact that quite a few wires (seven) have sheared in the door loom.

I've read the excellent instructions in the FAQ and in a host of other posts, but one question appears to be unanswered - assuming I need to patch in some extra wire (or even replace some lengths) what gauge wire do I need? A few posts recommended going slightly higher gauge (presumably if replacing, not patching) but what gauge is the existing wiring?

Thanks.

I just replaced like for like (theres two basic sizes there, couple of the wires are thicker than the rest).

Can't provide the gauges as don't know offhand, I'll have a look tomorrow if i can find the remaining bits of the reels i used.

Wouldn't go any thicker, as it will make it less flexiable though.

If that door loom is in bad shape you might want to check the rest of the doors - especially the boot.

Replacing the wire is best way to go - keep the joints outside of the bit that does most of the movement as far as you can else you will be back in there again to sort it.

The wiring is known to be a weak point on these and routinely fails in the door gaiters, so not surprised you have problems there, though at least they seem fairly simple on this occasion.
