Title: Check Oil Level Warning
Post by: drober42 on January 21, 2013, 06:27:27 PM
Hi everyone,
Hope somebody can help with this, whilst driving up to Scotland last week the Gal threw a warning "CHECK OIL LEVEL", when the oil was checked there was plenty in there, have had the oil and filter changed which has made no difference! Checked the car on diagnostic which is showing no faults, so has anybody got any ideas as to what it could be?

The level sensor is located in the sump itself and looks after oil level, oil temperature and oil quality (Although the temp and quality parts are only used on the Sharan and Alhambra). Nearly all Zetec and Ghia Galaxy's up to 2003 have them fitted and then it became somewhat hit and miss ;)

They have been known to fail although if for whatever reason you don't have the engine undershield fitted then its also been known for the connector to have water ingress or to get damaged as its one of the lowest points on the engine:

You can see it in the bottom right on this photo:

And what it looks like out of the vehicle:

Carries part number 1J0907660B and it about Ã,£90 from VW although you can get aftermarket ones for a lot less. Its also one of those generic VAG parts that's fitted to lots of other models such as the Passat, Golf & Touran.

You need to get under and check the wiring/connector out, after that replace the sensor as a cluster fault is the least likely and its directly fed into it. Probably obvious but I should point out you need to drain the oil before removing the sensor ;)

Hi Mirez,
Thanks for the quick reply, the sump sensor was changed but made no difference, oil temp gauge working fine nothing comes up on diagnostic, only other sensor I can think of now that maybe faulty oil sensor fitted into the oil filter housing? Unless I happen to have 2 faulty sump sensors?

Well there we go then then!, it was the sump sender, just happened to have 2 faulty senders! edited the soft coding which took out the Oil level/Temp sensor and no errors reported! New sensor now ordered, job done!
Thanks for the help

No problem, was the replacement OEM or aftermarket?

Aftermarket, but looking at it it could be o with the vag,Audi symbols look to have been ground off, if this fails after less than ayear will be replacing it with an oem part

Yeah! Just need to change the sump and wire in the sender, three wires very easy job did it with mine, and put the six dial dash in as well to have the oil temp  as well!
