Title: Rumbling noise at acceleration?
Post by: Kheopsz on February 24, 2018, 10:58:50 AM
Hi,

I have a 2002 automatic 1.9 pdti sharan.

It has got a vibration around 40-50mph from the last year, I know the nearside driveshaft has an inner joint problem, the rubber stuff around is broken, so I will replace it in 2 weeks.

Last August it developed a knocking/rumbling noise: when I pushed the accelerator it started knocking (like a washing machine at spin) around 60-70 mph. If I left the accelerator, the noise disappeared, if I touched it started again. Only if I was above 60mph.

After till Jan there wasn't any noise, it disappeared.

A week ago the noise started again around 50mph, and now it's around 45mph.
The strange thing is if I don't push the gas, there is no noise, even at 60-65mph...
And I think if I push it the gas gently the noise is much stronger, as if I push it hard.

I can feel the noise, something is knocking, I can gently feel on the floor.

Is it the driveshaft? If I replace it, will it fix the problem?
I will replace both of them, just I am wondering is it something else.
I replaced the top mounts around 4-5 weeks ago.

Thanks

Hard to say without seeing/hearing the problem but from what you describe and a known driveshaft issue I suspect new shaft will resolve it.
