Recently, my 2004 Ford Galaxy TDI would not go into gear properly I to had force the gears. Took the car to mechanic he found the problem straight away on the passenger side there is a cover or cap which goes in the gearbox that had come off and all the oil was leaking out hence why I had a problem getting the car into gear. He advised I should replace that cover or cap just in case it comes off. Does anyone know what this cover or cap is called and where I can get it from? Also I need to top the oil the box which is the correct one for the 6 speed box? I have told it is best to Dexron?
Sounds like the breather to me,the cap allows gearbox to breath but keep oil in.
Not 100% on gear oil but I would suspect it is something like 75/80 gl4 or gl5 synthetic. I am assuming you are talking about a manual box?
There is also a large cap on later gearboxes (about 3inch diameter) with the engagement shaft behind it. A 2004 may have that cap as well but they are normally buggers to remove so Its unlikely to have just fallen out.
Did you had whining sound while in 5th gear, while you are not accelerating? Cap Mirez was talkin about is indeed pita to get out when you need it, but i have seen them coming out with bad bearing. That also explains loss of oil.
