especially if you tow,
https://www.gov.uk/changes-to-the-driving-licence-and-categories
Thats even more confusing then it was before!!! If I read that right then if you passed before 2013 you now have full entitlement up to 3500 where as before it was only if you passed before 1997?
That page doesn't show the full changes, test passes before the new rules come into force (19/01/13) have grandfather rights regarding towing so nothing changes, however (as I understand) new drivers are limited to a 750kg MAM trailer or 3500 MAM combined, which means no trailer with a disco, and I think a lot of caravans will be off limits until the relevant higher category and/or trailer entitlement is passed.
The important bit for existing commercial drivers is the renewal, at 45 you need a FULL medical anyhow and every subsequent 5 years. New drivers in cats C & D will need to renew their licence every 5 years before they reach 45 by self-certifying that they are medically fit to drive, this is in addition to the periodic driver CPC, digi tacho card renewal and photocard (10 years). In Sept this year DVLA should be going ahead with combining the photocard with the digi tacho card and possibly dCPC card, however details whether this will go ahead haven't been released as far as I'm aware.
