Title: Exhaust backbox/silencer
Post by: europgal on January 09, 2013, 07:50:26 PM
Hi everyone - I have a galaxy mk2 1.9 130 and the back box is hanging loose - just held on at the back - the ford garage want Ã,£150 to fit it - doesnt seem much of a job for that sort of cash- wondered if i could get some advice on whether its worthwhile to buy the part and try myself - what would be required and any pitfalls - i'm quite handy at diy but i would have to fit it on my drive - dont have any other facilities.
Is it worthwhile or should i try kwik fit etc for price?
Thanks guys

Sounds like the rear box has rotted away and is hanging on the rubbers.
Successfully replacing just the rear section depends on the condition of the forward section, because you now need to remove the short broken off piece without damaging the forward section, a garage could do this by heating it with oxy-acetylene equipment or an impact air chisel

i had the same dilema when mine went on my mk2 tdi,i played a few exhaust places off against 1 another and iirc correctly i got a whole system for about the price you been quoted for the rear box.plus my new 1 had a 2 or 3 warranty(minds gone, its the age you know)

I'd say do a full visual inspection of the exhaust first. In theory changing the back box is ultra simple but the constant heating/cooling and rusting normally mean they are on solid!

You could also consider a stainless exhaust if you plan to keep to car long term. I had a full stainless including replacement cat fitted for Ã,£300.

Had a good look today and some brute force will be needed so it looks like i'll be getting some quotes. From replies on here it seems the Ã,£150 I was quoted for just the backbox is daylight robbery and I assume other bits will need replacing in the near future.
But the prices you mention like Ã,£150 for the lot plus the cat or Ã,£300 for stainless steel look very appealing. (I thought you had to have stainless steel custom built which sounds an expensive option?)
Can you point me to the right places where I might get some decent quotes?
Thanks for all the replies

It was indeed custom made - I used a company called "Longlife", http://www.longlife.co.uk/ as they have a lot of recommendations although there are plenty of others out there and it's worth haggling as they do move a little on price.
