I've managed to get a lovely set of 18" RS6 rims for the Sharan;
I also have the chance to get 4 new tyres at 235/40/18, would there be any rub before I take the plunge?
I've seen a few people with 18's and/or chunky wheels, so hoping to have some input!

Are you sure the tyre size is correct as rs6 had several sizes over the years but non of them were 235 width I don't think.
There are online calculators that you can use to input existing tyre/wheel size in and the new and it will give the rolling radius so you can see how different they are.
Going from 16 to 18 with lower profile tyres might not actually be much different in terms of rolling radius.
Likely to be much different in ride quality, though. It might look good, depending on your taste, but the ride is likely to be much harsher.
Isn't there quite a bit of evidence regarding low profile tyres being more susceptible to tramlining, as well?
18's look lovely and really compliment the car but yes, you'll certainly feel the road more. I have 225/45/18 on mine, the higher the middle number the more depth the tyre has so the harshness is lessoned. I can't imagine it now but I did have 235/30/18's on once!
235 is wide so you notice a decrease in fuel consumption and as above, it's more prone to following the road. 225 doesn't make a huge difference to either but 225/45 seems to be more commong and therefore a tad cheaper .

I have just come back from my biennial french MOT. I was informed that the tyre size fitted are not approved for the car and they all have to be replaced. The tyre size is 205 65 R16C Goodyear Cargo van (Winter). The same size as fitted when I bought the car. This is the second MOT at this testing station and it has never come up before. I was aware they were a different size to the ones on the tyre pressure sticker inside the drivers door. The tester said that they invalidate the insurance in the event of an accident. I suppose I will get some summer tyres like Goodyear Ultragrip but I will keep the old ones for winter. Bummer but there you go!
Do they even look at that when an accident happens? That's a bummer alright.
Yes they do!m Insurance is a money making business - they won't pay if they can avoid it. If there is a substantial claim they go to town. :'(
Sorry of the delay in replying. Well, over here the Insurance market rules the country like the housing market does in the UK. Saying that, I had experience of a loss adjuster and car repair after an incident with one of the local drunk drivers a few years ago and the service was sloppy, unprofessional and dogmatic. When I made a fuss to the insurers the loss adjuster said I should have contacted him directly fo a simple life.... Also they're pretty difficult and dogmatic over here when it comes to tyres due to the influence of the huge tyre industry in France. It's very difficult to buy one tyre if you have a good one to match it. Tyres are cheap but fitting is extra at 15 euros+ a corner. Changing to winter tyres is very common here and buying tyres on t'interweb and having them fitted locally is increasingly popular. I'm looking for an extra set of used wheels for new efficientgrip tyres all round. It was always on my bucket list to have a set of winter and summer tyres on two sets of wheels. Another dream fulfilled...... Hey ho!
