Title: Radiator Hoses
Post by: bigjeeze on August 19, 2017, 02:26:56 PM
Can anyone tell how to get the bottom hose off of my MK2?  I am trying to remove it so that i can do the solenoid change. I have removed the c clip but I have not been able to shift it at all - I am close to tearing the damned thing out of the radiator it's so tight.  So far that has added about 2 hours to what should have been a straight forward job, and the worst aspect is that I still cannot shift it!  Do they twist do they pull straight off ?  How the hell do I remove it without destrying the rad?

Help please!!

If it's the same as other vw coolant hoses they push in and cannot be twisted as there is a key way.

Patience and spraying wd 40 or the like usually helps.

Thanks guys - already dosed it with plenty of wd40 - I have been trying to remove it by a straight pull but it isn't shifting - I'll does it again and leave it a while.

Finally got the bugger off!!.      I now have two bolts with the heads rounded off to contend with.!!

Not going well so far!

Well I got the two bolts out fairly easily - only to discover two more! - both of which are really awkward to get to and of course the socket slips on each. The power steering reservoir is in the way and the mounting bracket appears to be welded to the chassis so I can't move it.

If Mirez is looking on here - are there two different types of front panel on these gearboxes? Because in your write up you talk about 10 bolts fixing it - I have 20 on mine.  Mine is the 5 speed auto box.

Well back to the fray. :-\

Finally managed to get the solenoids in and the panel back on - rain stopped play so I still have to put the battery box etc in - but fingers crossed should complete this evening.

Sorry buddy only just catching up on my foruming!

Yeah it was missing the "mm" from after the 10 in that write up, I dont think I counted the exact number but there are certainly more then 10.

Congratulations on the work so far!

Thanks Mirez - It's all back together now - and the gear change seems smooth and timely. I'll wait until the morning to give it the real test. I am trying to work out what I haven't done as it now intermittently won't start in park - I have to go into Neutral, and also reverse sometimes isn't there until I wiggle the stick.  I am assuming I have not got the gear change cable correctly adjusted - which is a pain as I will have to take the battery box out to get at it . Is there a method of adjusting it?

Incidentally - the solenoids went in really easily -( with a lot of care and patience) even the one with the nut - I held the stud in place with a knife blade to ensure it wasn't pushed back in.

Good work! Its not that bad really, its just that bugger of a nut that could ruin your day.

The mechanism can be adjusted but its probably more likely that the 'selector register' as its known isn't quite back properly. Thats this bugger:

As you can see the bolt holes are elongated so it can rotate a reasonable amount and its that the registers what gear you are aiming to select. Worth trying to adjust that although the method for adjusting the cables is also easy - there are videos on youtube detailing it far better then I could explain here :)

I had supposed that this was the likely culprit -  I did mark it as you said in your write up but maybe I didn't get it right. I didn't touch or interfere with the cable per se but no doubt I altered something!

Anyhow the 1st to 2nd gear change is so smooth you almost don't feel it - so all worthwhile. Thanks again for the write up - superb!!

Title: Auto Gear selector
Post by: bigjeeze on October 08, 2017, 06:58:22 PM
After fitting new solenoids and following Mirez's excellent instructions I realized I had lost the proper adjustment on the gear selector - ( 2 months ago!) I finally got round to removing the battery tray etc to get at it today.  I tried altering the 3 bolts that allow you to alter the position but then decided to take of the selector - but when I go the central nut off  before removing the selector I noticed that there is a notch on the shaft from the gearbox and a corresponding one on the selector - I lined them up tightened the nuts and voila!! all gears back where they should be.

Well happy now!.
