Hi Guys, I have a 2001 2.3 petrol Galaxy and I'm now thinking of changing to a diesel.
Any advise on what to look out for when buying?
What the auto like? Is it reliable and is it heavy on diesel?
Thanks,
Dave
Don't know much about the auto I know they can suffer with dodgy solenoids,my advice is give it a good test drive so nice and hot and make sure it changes gear ok and pulls away ok etc. I would factor a fluid change in if you buy one for peace of mind.
Engine wise make sure it's got full service history and that correct vag spec oil used as the camshafts don't like other oil, check it runs smooth and pulls well when foot put down.
Also check for signs of coolant loss around expansion bottle as head gasket failure not uncommon especially the 115bhp engines.
Hi I have an Automatic. It isn't as good on gas as my manual - it's fine on a run and will do about 45mpg but around town not so good - maybe 30mpg. Mine had around 180k on the clock and has a fault with the gearbox when cold sticking in first gear ( I have the solenoids to replace but haven't got around to it yet!) Once warm it's absolutely fine. My only concern now with any diesel is the way the government looks like charging us a hell of a lot of money to use one.
Thanks lads! Went for a manual instead.
Good work! Welcome to the fold :)
Thanks! Picked up a 03 Ghia 130 bhp with leather. Nice car but needs some work.
Very noisy over the petrol though.
The PD is a bit agricultural, has it got the under tray, engine top cover with the foam sound deadening fitted still? As that makes it marginally quieter.
Has the bonnet cover but the tray under the engine is gone.
That will make it more noisy, what about the clip on cover on top of engine?
It has the clip on cover. I'll look for a bottom cover in the scrap yard as they help keep it clean too!
