				Does anyone actually see the point in these awful things?
The galaxy used to suffer clogging of the egr and I got fed up with cleaning due to rough running I fitted an allard delete kit along with simple vac hose set up, it runs better and exhaust seems cleaner.
The xtype with ford lump used to emit black crap under acceleration,I tried cleaning egr which only marginally improved things, on this lump you can't just blank it as the vac controlled egr also has electronic monitoring. I made a blank plate with an 8mm hole to keep dreaded EML light off. The car is transformed no black exhaust smoke on acceleration and the slight hesitation I got to live with has now gone.
In laws have a Vauxhall with the 16xe lump which kept having poor running and low power due to sticky egr,I cleaned several times only for problem to return. Turns out Vauxhall parts actually sell a blanking gasket that has small hole to allow just enough gas through to keep ecu happy.... again car is transformed.
			
			
			
				Do you now have no flap then? I have with previous pd lumps put a blanking plate on to stop the egr flow but found economy goes down a little.  I have always wondered if you remove it totally then you have no last line of defence with a runaway diesel engine.

				That's correct anti shudder valve has gone aswell, my thinking is it's no different to a lot of other diesels in the event of engine runaway I would just try to stall it in 5th if it ever happened.
			
			
			
				Maybe.  Might be worth keeping a spare pair of pants in the glovebox if all fails.

				Hopefully it won't happen in next couple of months before I sell it on,just got to find time to sort my A3 out and the gal will be going to pastures new
			
			
			
				I don't have a problem with the theory of them - they warm the engine up quicker and reduce oxides of nitrogen.  The design is awful, though.  They should be a cassette that you can easily extract for cleaning and refurb. Everyone knows by now that they are a pain, so continued problems are simple ineptitude by manufacturers.
