Started to strip this A3 1.9tdi down and when taking turbo I take pipe off the compressor nut fell out.
I had engine running briefly and noticed top end noise which I assumed was lifters drained down after been sat for a while, also got no vac from tandem pump.'
Oil level fine and oil pressure light was out when running.
My initial thoughts are loss of oil pressure to top end has killed the tandem and also low pressure to turbo has caused shaft to seize but compressor carried on spinning loosening nut off. However the turbo shaft can be rotated and it slides in and out had it seized then I would imagine it would be stuck in the turbo?
Anyone got any thoughts?
When it (the turbo) runs starved of oil, it'll literally be spinning then stop dead. The sudden shock of the stop can keep the nut spinning, (which it is a reverse thread on it, I think off hand...?) until it comes loose. You hear of horror stories where it's came back into the casing and trashed the internals!
Being 'hard-driven' or heavy footed, or even remapped to overboost can cause the heats inside the turbo to increase, which when cooled can do the same as most of us all do when we need the oxy torches out to loosen a pig of a nut!
I think I am gonna check oil pressure before I rip engine apart and see supply to top end is like aswell.
Just seems odd no pressure light on when running but tandem not giving vac,top end noisy and turbo nut come loose??
Well it turns out the engine is kaput it has been run with no water in and got extremely hot which in turn melted a plastic baffle in the sump, this then got sucked up the oil pick up starving engine of oil.
@Mirez don't suppose you have a working BKC from one you have broken do you,or anything that has the same block as I have a decent head already.
Can get an AUY for decent money but struggling for a BKC lump they are all stupid money.
Go for an AUY if they're cheap enough, just that little bit more pulling power.
I am contemplating it after doing loads of research it seems I can swap all the bits over ok but I need to change plug on crank sensor, swap cam pulley over and possibly re-route some pipe work by oil filter housing as the housings are different but can't be changed over as mount on block different.
Sadly not mate, I only have an ASZ block but someones supposd to be coming for that this Wedneday.
No problem mate it turns out the crank sensor is a pain as you need a BKC type which requires special tooling as part of rear main, the existing can't be wired in as different ecu protocol, also the intercooler pipe work will not go round oil filter housing of anything other than BKC or BXE.
Found a running engine with turbo etc for Ã,£200 just got to sort out pivkingnit up from London.
