Title: Loud thud when reversing and going from 3rd to second
Post by: Mark Vardy on June 16, 2017, 10:15:37 PM
Hi,Iv had a new DFM clutch fitted about 2 months ago,it took them longer to do as they said due to the new clutch it has blown the hydraulics,Iv noticed recently a very heavy bang and thud when I start to reverse, and when I go down the box from 3rd to second I sometimes get it and it feels and sounds like if you had something heavy like a full jerry can in the boot and braked quick and it moved and hit the back seats,it's not coming from the boot but it's the feeling,Iv tried to find the clutch fluid resivior to see if it's loosing oil but can't find it,has anyone got any info as to what might be going on?
Kind regards,
Mark

check to see if your gearbox/stabilizer bar hasnt snapped.engine off grab hold of engine and try and rock it.

Clutch fluid is taken from the brake fluid res, there is a small hose that comes off bear the top.

So is the thud feeling/noise from the back or the front?

In that case as gregers suggested check the stabiliser bar, also worth a quick check of the other mounts to make sure no excessive play.

The stabiliser bar is underneath ata back of engine, you will need the lower tray off to get access.

I would check the usual places like Euro car parts, gsf and vw dealer to get idea of prices.
However before buying and replacing I would check them first as it may or may not be a mount and if it is I doubt all 3 would be faulty.

Thanks jonnyroper,Iv ordered the rear gearbox/engine mount as the engine moves a lot,if it doesn't fix the issue I think it's probably needed anyway.

Certainly sounds like you could have a mount issue if engine moves a lot,it's usually the rear stabiliser as that takes a pounding. Worth a quick look though as my x type the bolts were loose where it connects to gearbox so only needed to see a spanner to sort it out.

Ah thank you I'll take the under tray off tomorrow and have a look at the bolts,be brilliant if that's all it is,

When mine snapped it would noticeably clunk when changing direction. If it is that, dont wait too long to get it replaced as the engine twisting snaps the AC pipe from the compressor :(

Well a bit of an update, the wife lost drive today and some horrible gringing coming from the front and she thought the clutch had gone,I went to meet her and it sounded more like drive shaft, after stripping the drive shaft it's the teeth on the driverside in the gearbox that's filled all it's teeth off and the boot has split on the sliding part with the 3 bearings, should be back on the road tomorrow, thank you for all the help and advice.

Galaxys has too many things that sound a lot alike. for thud when shifting it is usualy gearbox mount (check it just in case, it comes out of bushing up and down) intermediate driveshaft (loss of drive as result when completly gone) and bad driveshafts as you found out.

Hopefully that is the noise/feeling you have experienced prior to the grinding your wife had,and the old gal back on the road again soon.
