Title: Burnt Coolant and Limp mode
Post by: yeshu26 on September 24, 2016, 10:17:23 AM
A very Good Morning,
Car VW Sharan 1.9 TDi Diesel 195000 miles.

Background of the Problem:

It all started few weeks or  back, when my dashboard popped up error *Check Engine Coolant*. Panicking I took it to a local guy who said you might have a slow leak of the coolant. Coolant topped up, and hasn't leaked for a few weeks now.

The sometimes I used to get error *ENGINE WORKSHOP* with the *COIL HEATER BULB* flashing. I ignored it. Then it happened again, specially when you do a short run and park the car, and try to restart it. A week back on the dual-carriageway the car won't go beyond 50, and I knew there is a problem. It is not clutch, because it passes the "clutch tests". Engine shut down, restarted problem solved. Now it has become more often, with engine workshop warning coming often BUT only when the car has come to a full voluntarily stop.

Dr Google suggests it might be stuck EGR valve and/or dirty turbo.

NO  abnormal warnings, EXCEPT the *ENGINE WORKSHOP* occasionally when the car has come voluntarily to a full stop and turn on the key.

Please comment.

Thanks

Himanshu

First thing to do is get plugged in and see what faults flagged up as it could be several things.

Thanks,

But there is no codes showing up. Is this not a typical Turbo problem or can be something else?
thanks

Turbo will give a boost deviation code.

Are brake lights working ok?

Was it plugged in with vcds or a generic scanner?
Generic dint always show every code usually just emissions related ones

No it has not been plugged to anything yet. I do not have  fault code reader. All the errors are reported from the Dashboard.

So what all kind of faults lead to this *limp mode fault*?

Thanks

The errors shown on dashboard are indicating there is a fault with engine and it needs plugging in to see what is causing it.

It could be a number of faults from n75,vac issues, sticking vnt,maf etc. You can't really do anything unless you know the fault codes.

It sounds like the original coolant level warning issue is unrelated to the running problems then.

As above, you need to see what fault codes have been stored to give you an idea of where to start looking.

Thank you,

1: I had disconnected the battery for some time to see if it resets. Perhaps an un-wise decision.

2: Then I putted Forte Turbo cleaner in the diesel tank, and took it for Italian Tune up some 30 miles round trip. Driving on n dual carriage-way always at high revs.

For now the fault has not re-registered, the limp mode has not jumped back yet.

Could well be sticky vnt then,if fault comes back get fault codes read and see what comes up

Thanks,

I am just thinking you know all those DIY kits on the ebay? I the ECG valve is really stuck to cause problems, then how does superficial cleaning help. Does not sound very scientific.

The EGR and indeed the vnt need stripping to clean properly, additives etc are waste of time and money.
