Title: 2005 1.9tdi ford gaalaxy
Post by: lawrence on September 22, 2016, 09:27:53 PM
HI ,
I need some advice regarding noise when inputting left and right turns and also while engine is idling , noise seems to be  coming from steering pump. On further investigation it appeared to me that the tensioner for the drive belt was moving excessively indicating
a weak tensioner spring ,fitted new tensioner but no improvement with the same amount of movement on new tensioner.

Next I fitted a second hand steering pump ,also with no improvement .

The noise goes away as I bring up the revs.

I have checked the other pulleys for play ,alternator and A/C the seem fine.

Could the cluth pulley on alternator be causing this problem.

thanks for any help

Sounds VERY much like the alternator clutch. There is a how-to in the ref library for checking it as it should freewheel in one direction and I would suspect yours won't!

Without doubt it's the overrunning alternator pulley, mine had exact same problem when I bought it the pulley was seize for solid. I also had vibration through steering when going lock to lock at idle.
