Hello
I had an outer driveshaft (drivers side) catastrophically fail recently and while it was going it decided to cause a bit of damage to something among the intercooler pipes - I'm presuming its turbo as when I tested car after replacing inner/outer driveshafts it wasn't working / loud hissing under acceleration.
I have included a photo taken from underneath the car (the blurred silver bolt at the bottom of photo is from the newly fitted driveshaft - where inner meets outer) As you can see, the metal end of the black hose is butted up against a busted flange but I can't quite make out what it is/was.
I'd appreciate any ideas as to what it is that's broken and be grateful if you told me its really cheap and easy to fix.
Thanks in advance.

the pipes clip together with a large horse shoe clip, that "lump" is were the clip locates----but the aluminium end of the pipes been broken off in your picture....you need somebody with parts catalog or a quick trip to vw dealer to see if the pipe is available and a new clip as well.
It's difficult to tell from your photo, but I'm afraid that looks to me very much like part of the turbocharger turbine housing is cracked- see this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-GALAXY-2001-2006-MK2-1-9-TDI-ASZ-TURBO-GOOD-WORKING-CONDITION-/301986664795?hash=item464fced15b:g:q-kAAOSwepJXYce4) listing (it's the part at the upper right of the picture). Not all Mk2 TDI turbo's have that type of extended outlet on the turbine housing depending on engine code but mine (engine code ASZ) does, and it looks like yours does as well. If it is that part that's busted, you'll need to substitute the turbo or find another one the same that you can swap the turbine housing over from I'm afraid. :(
As Paul said above looks like charge air outlet has been broken off from turbo housing.
Many thanks - the listing definitely shows it's the housing from the turbo... :(
I 've just spent nearly Ã,£800 on doing the driveshafts (that includes car hire while it was off the road). Does anyone know how much a new turbo will likely cost / what sort of competency it would require to do?
Thanks
Turbo can be had for about Ã,£200 reconditioned or you could search for a used one.

Fitting wise you need offside drive shaft off for access and also a new oil feed pipe as they usually fracture. Then there is the manifold gasket.
It's a bit of a job to do but possible for someone quite handy with the spanners, don't forget it will need oil and filter change also and most companies who supply reconditioned units say new air filter also.
Your broken pipe could be this p/n 7M3145955AG .
Try to search it on ebay or in a "scrap garage".
Other possibility is to cut it and make an "splice" with a rubber hose.
That part is for an inter cooler pipe, the broken part is the turbo compressor housing outlet. I wouldn't cut and splice as the hose would also need adapting. Turbo replacement only way to go.
Just realised my terminology was incorrect, I should have said it was part of the compressor wheel housing (air intake side) that was busted, not the turbine wheel housing (exhaust side)! :-[
