Anyone had a 1.9tdi lump out of a galaxy? Is it out the top or bottom and can it be removed with the manual box still attached?
Some discussion and the odd picture in this (https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy/head-gasket-or/msg15351/#msg15351) thread. I.M.O the best option which will give the most room to work is to remove the entire front end- bumper, crash beam and front panel complete with the intercooler, radiator and condenser. The whole lot (engine including transmission) can then then come out through the front. I'm pretty sure it'd be almost if not actually impossible to lift it out through the top, even with the bonnet removed.
Having looked at it I Kind of thought similar but had a 205 gti previously that was supposed to come out the bottom but managed to get out from the top with box still on. Not the same for Galaxy it would appear,oh well whole front end off it is then.
It's supposed to drop out the bottom but pulling it out the front is much, much easier
Ok thanks for the advise, doesn't sound like engine alone can be lifted out then?
Either out bottom or front end off and out the front.
I can't see how you could lift the engine out whilst leaving the transmission in situ- I just don't think you'd have the room to clear the clutch and flywheel past the gearbox bell housing, plus unless the gearbox was rigidly supported it'd be wobbling around all the while you were trying to move the engine! Dropping it out the bottom may be doable as Mark says but what you save by not taking the front end off will probably be compensated for by the extra aggro trying to mate the gearbox back up with the engine when you go to put it back in! If the gearbox isn't rigidly held when you do it I imagine getting the clutch lined up will be a royal P.I.T.A!
In the past I have had engines out while leaving box in,when I worked at Vauxhall it was the quickest way rather than dropping sub frame and separating on the floor. Don't remember having any issues getting back in. Like has been said already front end removal and pull lot out sounds the best way on a galaxy
My comments were specifically relating to the Galaxy- not saying it can't be done on other vehicles because it can but because of the 'underslung' engine bay on the Galaxy it limits your choices trying to do much through the top.
Ok see what you are saying, looks like a big front end strip down on the cards in next few weeks then.
